thanks, but are you positive? because the DDR2 was a lot cheaper. and if you wouldnt mind explaining it, what is the difference?

Yes, Fred is right. Your motherboard uses DDR. The memory you linked to is DDR2. Not only will it not work, it won't even fit into the slots on your motherboard. DDR2 is dirt cheap right now while the older DDR is bit more expensive. Here's another link to some ideas for DDR: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=147&name=DDR-RAM-Memory
So, do NOT buy any DDR2 memory. It will not fit into the slots on your motherboard and it will not work. You need standard DDR memory.

why is older DDR-1 more expensive?

Probably just because it's older and the demand is lower. But the people that need DDR, really need it so the retailers can charge a bit more because they know they can get it. With the demand for DDR2 being so much greater, older DDR costs more to manufacture because the factories are set up for DDR2. With so many people now using DDR2, the price has dropped on all brands so they can stay competitive.

is it a lot better? should i consider buying a motherboard that can support it?

Well, now, fewer people are using DDR RAM, and companies still want to make money off of it, so they raise the prices.

Kind of like when you're at a sporting event and everything costs more at the concession stand. It's your only choice while you're there, so you're forced to pay.

They are not mass producing it anymore. It is easier to run the machines at full speed for the same item over and over.

My other system is a Compaq sr1610NX needs Pc3200 400 speed ram. Someone this weekend, TigerDirect.com I think had them for $9.99 a stick and now I cannot find that deal.... :cry

Both TigerDirect and NewEgg have memory configurator tools.

You'd get more replies if you specified what type of help you needed, and also, the people in the forum prefer if you start a new thread rather than piggybacking onto an old thread. That is posting about your own problems in somebody else's thread.

oh sorry kinda new to this and just saw hardware and thought i might be able to find help here. basically, im finishing building my computer with the following specs:
    ASUS M2NPV-VM MB
    160 GB Western Digital HD
4 GB Patriot Extreme Performance 800mhz ram
can add more specs if needed.
but my problem is that when i try to install the 4th stick of ram my comp wont pass post it keeps giving that annoying beep. i can do 3 GBs fine but for some reason not all 4. I've flashed the bios but still no luck. any ideas?

Do you have a 32-bit system?

They can only address up to 3.2 GB of RAM if I remember correctly (and you should have posted in a new thread or else the original poster would get confused with all of this)
