Please bear with me, I’m dumb.

Ok, so I bought a used laptop last year which the previous owner erased his personal data from the drive, but left a standard login with the password being password - I’m technology incompetent, but was able to change the password to my usual 4 number login…

after cloning the HDD to an SSD (acronis software that came free with a different SSD I bought recently) which went without issue, the computer boots asking me to sign into MS, it doesn’t accept my MS account login, but after a few tries I hit “skip for now” and it let the computer boot up - don’t know if this is normal, but I’m wondering if this is something that is eventually going to come back to haunt me, or can I just leave it as is? I still have the old HDD and tried opening it as an external on a different laptop to see if I could find admin info or whatever, but I really don’t know what I’m doing, so before I do something that destroys everything/everyone in a 5 mile radius, I figured I’d ask you fine folks for some advice. thanks in advance!

I would try getting away from the Microsoft account. To do so, create a local account.

Go into Settings. Select 'Accounts'. Scroll down a bit and select 'Other Users'. Click on 'Add Account'. Click on 'I don't have this person's sign-in information'. Fill in the fields on the 'Create a user for this PC' form. Click 'Next'.

I would tend to make this an Administrator account. To do so, click on the arrow for the user you just created and click on 'Change Account Type'. Select 'Administrator' and click on 'Okay'. You will then able to perform administrative tasks when they're called for, and I would leave this account alone except for when it's necessary.

Repeat the process, except leave the user as a standard user; this would be the account you actually use.

Log in to each and get them set up as you wish.

I'm not a huge fan of Microsoft accounts, though, and others here may suggest different options.
