Now that Windows 10 has been out for sometime now, what seems to be the current opinion of the group here on Win 10 and it's built in AV Windows Defender ?

It still doesn't rate very well beside the well-known free ones. It's better than nothing but not the best.

Hey Max, I'm running Win 1o but I've replaced Defender with Bitdefender Free which seems in my opinion to have improved over the last version. At least to me.

I use CIS but the Bitdefender engine is very good.

I used Defender and its predecessor, Microsoft Security Essentials, for about ten years and picked up nothing more than a handful of PUPs, which are harmless. But I don't visit dodgy sites or use filesharing and I know how to stay clean so I suspect I could have run for those ten years with no AV at all and still have been OK. More recently, after suffering problems through using Trusteer Rapport, I switched to Comodo Internet Security. It's not quite as invisible as Defender but doesn't bother you unnecessarily or make heavy demands on system resources. I certainly haven't seen anyone here blaming Defender for infections and believe that as long as you behave sensibly it is perfectly adequate.

I was actually refering to my observation - "Windows Defender is better than average")
But why settle for 99.7% when you can have 100%? For free!

The key words were ' but that doesn't say much'. In the real world the difference between 99.7 and 100 is b***er all.

I know a lot of users just use Defender because it's good enough for what they do, and because it uses little resources and doesn't slow down their PC.

I just use Defender on Win 8.1 and 10 and MSSE on Win 7. Definitions are updated, ofttimes, more than once/day. That and safe surfing (even more important) have kept me problem free.

Some users just don't understand how important safe surfing is until it much too late.

Yes I think internet behaviour is crucial, no matter what security software is installed. For a safe surfer and someone not too knowledgable, or interested in installing stuff, then keeping the built in security software on Win 10 will probably serve them ok. But for those more into IT and their system/systems, WD wouldn't be my choice.

This will add additional protection to Windows Defender.

If this is enabled, it should be checked after Windows Updates are installed to see if it is still active.

You'd have thought that was enabled by default, like it is in other AV/Malware programs.
Most users are not going to realise that, so Windows Defender O Other programs 1
