    Hello
I have read a statement from MS that we should remove Anniversary until it is fixed if it is freezing.
It seems a patch would fix that without removal.
I upgraded the laptop and it seems fine. I had issues with the desktop which prompted me to do a clean install
I still have trouble with hanging for 30 seconds before s response.
I also noticed an improvement when I removed Chrome(I likes b/c I could use the mic well) and 4 3rd party apps which I replaced but ovccasionally it till hangs. Cortana is not as accurate as Chrome.
B/c the lap works with Chrome and those 4 apps, and due to the MS advisory to remove Anniversry, it is hard to know what to do with my desktop. I read about the fixes which are safe mode and safe boot but they are temporary.
Is anypne else having the issue my desktop has and what are you doing to fix this?
I have images of both 1511 which runs well and 1607, clean, so what would you suggest?
    Thanks
    Peter

I am sorry satrow, as I had read that before, am part of it but see no fix. I see the two ways to safe start and clean boot. Aside from that I see reinstall.
There are 48 pages ; is it on page one?
Thank you for our kind reply

It's the first and last post:

    "Updated (8/31/16):

After the launch of the Anniversary Update for Windows 10, Microsoft received a small number of reports of Windows 10 freezing when signing into Windows after installing the Anniversary Update. With the help of users and MVP’s who posted on this thread an investigation determined that a small fraction of users who had moved app information to a second logical drive could encounter this issue.

The Windows Update released on August 31st for Windows 10 includes a fix for this issue. This update is automatically applied when installing the Anniversary Update.

If you still have the Anniversary Update installed and are experiencing this issue, and are a user who has two logical drives and has moved their app data to a second drive, please follow the steps listed in the ‘Answer’ of this post to resolve your issue.

If you uninstalled Windows 10 or the Anniversary Update because of this issue, we recommend you re-install now using the Windows Update Assistant by going to the Windows 10 download page and clicking the Update Now button.

    Thank you for clarifying.
Well, after upgrading and trying to fix it, then a clean install and the work it involves, I will keep your suggestion in mind but don't have the time or energy to do it now.
May I ask, are my ISO's from both tech bench and Windows (.WIM) still operable, or should I create another. I'd like to think the updates would fix any issues.

Whoops, I just went to that page and believe that is an .ESD file - correct? That would limit DISM options if so.

This is the reason why i dumped windows 1o and went back to 7.

As long as you allowed the update for the latest Win 10 (Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3176938)) then your system should work fine.
That is what should resolve the freezing issues for a tiny minority of users.
There are people who will say 'Windows 10 is crap so I'm not using it'.
It's a valid comment for them, personally, but it isn't very useful and it's not representative of general experience. The issues that arose with Win XP and Vista and 8 were massive and compared to Win10, people who went through those issues with XP and Vista & 8 would rightly conclude that Win 10 is actually great.
You should have no need of a clean install.

satrow's option was a viable one but I'd like .Wim.
I am not down on Windows; usually all is fine as with the laptop. I am just looking for a way to stop the freeze. By this I mean, after clicking to go to a site or perform, it stops for about 20-30 second before responding. I experience this about 1/3 of the time. When Chrome is installed it is a worse mess, but should not be. I replaced 3, 3rd party apps, and removed Chrome. It is better but still does freeze at times. I have done a clean install with both Windows and tech .
I have imaged back to 1511 which is great but I can only defer so long and defender is better with 1607.
I am not knocking Windows just seeking a solution to my issue.
This freezing and trouble with Chrome is quite prevalent on the web. it is not the small amount of users that one might think.
I have run SFC and DISM HEALTH. I have run safe mode and a clean boot. I cannot think of any more to do. It was suggested this am to go to power options and change the way power buttons do by turning off fast startup and it seems a bit better.
As I said the laptop was upgraded and is fine -this desktop ws not so lucky doing the same thing and they are almost identical.
So if you have any new ideas please let me know.
    TY
    Peter

I'm not understanding that. The suggestion was:
"If you uninstalled Windows 10 or the Anniversary Update because of this issue, we recommend you re-install now using the Windows Update Assistant by going to the Windows 10 download page and clicking the Update Now button."
That would include an update after the anniversary build.
If you haven't tried that, it is worth doing.

Peter, the fix/patch/update referred to fixes 3 main issues that crept in with AU (and probably some very minor ones), of those, the 'freeze' issue fix is only likely to fix those affected by using standard Windows options to move 'Special folders' to a separate drive, eg. from the System SSD to another drive, to make backups easier/keep personal data separate from Windows/Programs/Apps.

If your notebook has only one physical drive, then your freeze problem is likely to be from another cause, if that cause is down to 3rd party drivers, MS are unlikely to rush to patch it, it's not their responsibility.

Even so, as the patch contains multiple fixes, it's worth trying. If nothing else, doing so might help you pinpoint the real cause easier.

@ Max - Would this give me a .WIM or .ESD file? If .WIM I would be glad to as it would allow for the extended DISM option.
The ISOS I have used are .WIM and do not know about the referral. I will see if I can find out.
@satrow - Since I performed the power option change, there seems to be no freezing. Power options>choose what power buttons do>uncheck startup fast.
However, at the first sign that things are not going well I will do as instructed.
Thank you both very much for your help!
    Peter
P.S. I went to the page you referred me to and am confused. What should I do there?

Three Win 10 systems here. All have had their special folders moved, one from the SSD system drive to a HDD data drive and the other two from system drive to data partition on same SSD. None has had any freezing or other issues. Red herring I suspect.

If it was my system I would do the simple thing. Update the OS to the 1 September build in KB3176938 as mentioned earlier. Anything else looks a waste of time to me.

If it's a red herring, MS' telemetry in AU needs fixing as well.

I'm sure there are other reasons for the freezing though, it's just that I haven't had time recently to try to keep up with the reports (reddit might be useful, if you have a few spare hours).

I currently disabled fast startup >power options>choose what power buttons do and uncheck fast startup. For 3 hours there are no issues. It is either startup or Chrome. The www is covered with links about users having trouble with Chrome.

    - Thank you satrow.

Windows Update > Check for Updates
    OR
    Go to:
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=616447
and click 'Update Now' as suggested in post #9 above

I click on windows update regularly. it just gave me one that ends in 3928 - sorry I did not get it all. Is it of significance regarding this?
I noticed the link wanted me to download to desktop etc. Is that the same as updating Windows as I did?

The question peter is whether you have KB3176938 installed or not. If you are on 1607 you should have it automatically - all Win 10 systems here got it on Sep 1. If you do have it, and if freezing has stopped, possibly it was the update that fixed it rather than your change to your power options?

You said earlier you went back to version 1511.
By clicking on Windows Updates > Check for updates - it will give you the latest version 1607 build which is in the KB number I have already given.
If you use the Windows Update Agent that satrow and I have linked you to, it is merely an alternative way of getting the latest Windows 10 version build.
    It's as simple as that.
Clicking on 'Update History' (settings > update and security > update history) will show you what has been successfully installed and any that failed.
Search > System Information > this will tell you precisely which build you have in the the second line

I have 1607 and guess what? KB3176938 shows it was installed on 9-3-16. I thought the improvement was b/c I uninstalled chrome or fooled with the power opts.
So, as you all have pointed out the AU skipped me unless it was only done on that date for everyone. I notice in post 18 I should have gotten the update on 1 Sept.
I suspect it skipped me so I will now create a point and try Chrome again.
As a side note, I must click on updates about 2-3 x's a day although they are automatic b/c I realize the importance of them or proper functioning..

It installed on two separate dates on my 3 win 10 systems. I suspect they can't serve it to every system at the same time as it is 'out' of the main update day, which is second Tuesday each month.
Great to see you do have it though.
