Win 10 Pro 64bit, can't get rid of update and shutdown every time I shut down.
Ran the update troubleshooter, nothing fixed.
In updates shows: There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:
(shows 1709 and the May, March cum. updates)

Tried renaming C:\Windows\SoftwareDistrubution but it comes back access denied (even though command as admin). Any ideas appreciated!

Is 1709 installed or it is trying to update to 1709?

So the computer is trying to update to 1803.
There are lots and lots of problems trying to update to 1803.

This is for a laptop https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware-Laptops/Can-not-update-Windows-10-1803/td-p/6072821/page/5

Do you have Avira? If so, try this

If you don't have it, don't install Avira. That would just compound the problem.

If none of the above work, here is a four page thread that might offer additional ideas. I did not read the four pages.

Disable Windows Update in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. Reboot and try again. If all else fails boot with a live Linux disc and tear it out by the roots. Might want to do a checkdisk after that. The one Windows 10 machine I deal with on a regular basis has WU disabled. Sad how fragmented the Windows ecosystem has become. To think Redmond thought Windows 10 would solve that dilemma. I usually take Woody's advice on when to update, no 1803 here. Today is patch Tuesday (LOL).

I like the disable WU theory, will try that first!
    Thanks!

Got rid of update and shutdown, now I guess turn Windows update service back on and see what happens? I'm in no rush for 1803.....

So I turned the WU service back on, did a check for updates and it installed 1803 no problem!
    Weird......
