Win 10 V.2004...bit Of A Beast

It's been a bit of a surprise seeing how well Win 10 x64 runs on our two 7+ year old Lenovo Thinkpads, so well in fact we haven't ever given a thought to upgrading our hardware. But this latest feature update is a bit of a challenge, as both systems feel like they have their legs in chains as they struggle with the extra load 2004 imposes. Sure, some of the new additions, like phone integration, are pretty impressive but in truth easily lived without.

So if you, like us, are happily running 1909 or earlier on an older system, be sure to grab a good image of it before being tempted to upgrade to 2004 - which takes hours btw - because you may well find you want to revert.

Did you jump at the 'upgrade' (you sought it out, went through the usual Windows Update select/hide process), or were you 'pushed' (it happened without any warning, or as soon as you triggered a WU check)?

No problems here. This is a feature update so is almost like installing a brand new OS so that's why it takes so long.

Mine was pushed through Windows update.

It happened when I triggered a WU check. But it has also disabled access to the Shift+Restart Advanced Startup menu which is my only way of booting to my backup drive, so ATM there's no way back to my last 1909 image.

All settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Go back to previous version of Windows 10

Ah yes - forgot about that. Starting now

OK, back in 1909. Booting to USB still not working so need to take stock now. Thanks :)

Heck, might be more convoluted than I expected. AU was what, ?5? 'upgrades' ago and they still can't get the rollouts nailed yet, or the bailout/recovery?

I agree. I never had an update go wrong until the AU update. I ended up having to do a fresh install with the ISO after that. Luckily no problems since.

MS was supposed to stop rolling out unstable updates after the AU debacle but it seems like they are still using home users as unwilling beta testers.

The USB boot problem was my error but I wasn't happy with the system after reverting to 1909 so restored an image. I have now deferred 2004, this old laptop loves 1909.

I'm getting this message but no idea what they mean about my device:
"The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. We’re offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn’t quite ready for it. Once your device is ready, you’ll see the update available on this page. There’s nothing you need to do at this time."
Looked through 'learn more' but none the wiser.

Don't feel tempted to hasten the process in any way. Wait until it is pushed to you.
