win 2000 continuos warning sound

The last 3 days my win 2000 comp. suddenly makes a continuos warning ton and cursor and everything freezes. I can only get out with brutal force. My comp is over 2 years old. can anyone help with this, please? This has happened at least once a day the last 3 days. Thankyou for any help

the tone happens at any time- ususlly when I've been on the computer a few hours.

 

sounds like it might be a temperature alarm. I'd take off the cover and make sure all the fans are operating properly.

 

I agree with FW190. The key phrase was when you said it happens after you've been on it for a while. More specifically about the fans is , make sure the fan on the CPU is working properly. if every fan seems to be working ok, then I would leave the case cover off and work with your pc that way for a while to see if the problem happens again.

Well, that was certainly quick. Thank you both very much. I know nothing about cpu and such- but I saw 1 fan turning when I took the cover off. So, I'll just leave it off, and maybe all will be ok. Thanks again
