I dont want to reinstall this machine since I will have to spend 2 days putting all the necessary software back on it. Now I am going to try repair, and I am posting here in case someone had experiance with ir before.

I got windows 2000 with pentium 3 and 256 MB...
What happend is that we lost power at work and everytime u boot up the computer and go to do pretty much anything it freezes, ctrl+alt+del does not work....
    thanks

I got it down to the networking problem, I unplugged the Ethernet calbe and now it does not freeze anymore

It could be a system resource conflict between your NIC and another device but if it was freezing even when you weren't even using the network connection then possibilities are a service or process running in the background. I'd suggest you examine the 'Processes' running in Task Manager after the NIC is plugged and see if all applications/services are needed and/or valid. Don't overlook a malware possibility. also when the system freezes does it respond to CTRL+ALT+DEL?
Also try removing the NIC (if possible) and placing it in another slot...

No ctrl+alt+del does not work I just, I alredy uninstalled the NIC and reinstalled it....
Oh well im gonna try repair now, and now if the cable is not plugged in the PC does not freeze
I wish we had just all XP here darn it.....

See the problem was cause by a power outage.

are you sure that this is it?

Cuz I have to explain it to my boss....

But if u are sure that the NIC is damaged do let me know cuz I really do not want to reinstall windows to find out that it was the card all along.

OK after that last bit, I agree with Simonk, it is a high possibility that the NIC got hit by the jolt and turned it into a malfunctioning NIC which is worse not working....
Also use a 1800joules (or higher preferably) surge protector.

ive got to pop off here now till tomorrow as im going out ,but if other users on the network are getting difficulty
i would suggest it may be a internal network problem then,

I am sorry I didn't get to rid the developments until now and couldn't understand what you meant with your last post. It started with a PC now we got multiple machines and even a network, huh? Facts come out in installments! :)

    Possibilities at a glance:

~ the network settings could be faulty
~ even one of the machines with faulty HW component could be the cause
~ IP collusion (again caused by the first possibility)
~ major IP/Network based virial infection? hmmm...may be not.

But to better understand and guide you, my questions are:
~ How many PCs are on the network?
~ What OS is each using?
~ How are they connected to each other (what kind of a network setup, the topology)?
~ How long you had the problem and do you remember any changes at all made to software, netowrk, hardware prior to problem?
~ List the other Components in the network as well (Router, Print device, hubs, etc.)
