Win 2k Blue screen

I am working on a friends desktop it is Win2k.. after runinning a while and restarted it will blue screen - I forget the exact text, but it is common to find this in a google. The fix is to run scandisk - and it does work but having to do this everytime is annoying. I have ran every HD diagnostic & the drive is fine - still I swapped the drive and it continued... anyone have the long term fix for this?
