Win 2k not updating

My Win version is 5.0.2134.1 operating with Mozilla browser. My update icon continues to show 1 update to install, but when run, the icon re-appears after 1 minute. One attempt also showed me updates will only work on IE browser, however after trying that the icon keeps returning.

When I run an online check, I always get a message of a file of 0 bytes to install. Has anyone else experienced Malware which can do this?

Only other sign of ops system interference is a commencement of my printer drivers to drop-out, however this is sporadic and usually returns on a cold reboot.
