I have been using a Dell Optiplex 700mghz PC as sort of a file server. I'm running Windows 2K (Not Server). Everything was working and I must have made a change to security some place but can't find where.

I have a second drive and use it for file sharing. I share folders on that drive to share Documents, Pictures, MP3's. Now some of the folders will not let users access the files. Word and Excel docs when opened from a remote PC say they can't open the read only file. I try to copy the file to the local PC and I get a sharing violation. This started on my documents directory and my pictures directory. The directory with the MP3's and archive shares works OK and I can pull files off or add files. I have looked at the shares and make sure Everyone can use it and compaired the working and non working shares and they look identical. I tried removing the shares and adding them back in and still not good. I tried moving the files to a newly created directory and sharing it and the problem follows. I looked at the file attributes and they are OK. I have even shared the whole drive and the subfolders that work continue to work and those that don't still don't.

What could I have changed for it to only affect 3 out of 5 shared directories?

The only thing I can think of is that the remote computer is not 'pointing' to the correct folder/file/directory! I had a similar problem and finally realized there were 2 seperate folders with the identical name and when I put things into the folder I thought was being shared it actually wasn't. It was the other folder with the identical name. Just a suggestion!!!

Thanks, I checked it out and I don't see any other folders close on the same drive. From the remote computers I can see all the files and I can add files. I just can't open ones already there. I have found that if I log to one of the remote PC's as administrator I can access the files fine. I have the admin account set up with the same password on all systems. :(
