Win 7 Administrator

I just set up a new computer and it has Win 7 installed. It is set up with only one account and not set up to require a login/password. I'm set up as the only account (anyone who uses the computer simply boots it and it comes up with my account ready to use).

My problem is that I've tried to make some modifications or download some files from the Net, and had the pop-up window tell me I don't have the authority to do this: I must have "Administrator" status to complete the action.

I have looked everywhere I know to look, and everywhere I find my account described as an administrater account with all privileges. So why can't I make these changes or download these files?

This is starting to get time-critical because one of the things I can't download is my state income tax form, from the TaxCut software I installed.

That is by design. Windows vista and 7 has an administrator account, but you as the user even being administrator still requires you to run certain apps as an administrator. I know confusing, but, if you want less frequent requests, you can turn down it, by simply clicking START (orb)

type in: uac click "change user account control settings". Then change the bar to another selection. The lower it is, the least restrictive it will be.

Yeah, I have to do the same when running certain cmd line stuff, I have to run cmd elevated by right clicking on it and clicking run as administrator.

Say what theefool? Type it in where? I don't think the OP will understand this. ;)

Okay, hit the windows key (on the keyboard), type: uac (in the box that states "search programs and files")

    Re: Win 7 Administrater

    * First you'll need to open a command prompt in administrator mode by right-clicking and choosing "Run as administrator"
    * Now type the following command:
    net user administrator /active:yes

Simplified for the OP, theefool. :)

    Re: Win 7 Administrater

    OK, still a problem.

First, I'm running 7 Ultimate and I've already done the following, prior to posting the original Q:
went through Control Panel User Account Controls and set myself as administrator, disabled the other accounts (including the Administrator) and removed the password at login requirement.

I also opened the controls and set the security slider to the lowest possible setting; rebooted; and tried to download: got the same security popup with no option to allow download. Went back and reset the slider to the midrange (default?).

came here and posted the Q.
    OK: as of now...

Following the instructions here, I went to the sevenforums link and followed the instructions:
opened lusrmgr.msc then right clicked on the Administrator account and went to "Properties": it was already set to "Disabled".
Under the Users folder, there are four accounts:
Administrator, Guest, Hank (mine) and Homegroup. Mine is set as Administrator and other two are disabled.

And by the way, Tim is right: you have to give me instructions as if I'm Forrest Gump.

    Re: Win 7 Administrater

When I open H&R Block and try to download a State Return, UAC asks if I want to allow the program to make changes, and I click 'yes': a popup follows that says "You need administrator privilege in order to purchase and install a state." There is an "OK" button, and when you click it you simply return to the H&R Block page.

Note: the secure desktop (dimmed screen) does NOT appear when this happens.

    Re: Win 7 Administrater

I just did the unchecking of the disable account, administrator showed up fine, upon log off. I've went ahead and disabled it afterwords.

Btw, what browser are ye using? IE, ff, chrome, etc...

    Re: Win 7 Administrater

So I should reinstate the disabled administrator account; log off (or reboot?), then disable it again?

    I'm using IE

    Re: Win 7 Administrater

Or are you telling me to re-enable the administrator account, and leave it enabled?

    Re: Win 7 Administrater

Sorry, I'm probably, confused. I was hoping to find out if you unchecked the disable. I'll post a pic.

Unfortunately, I'm off to bed. I hope someone can run in here and help ye out.

    Re: Win 7 Administrater

I don't understand if you're just asking whether I enabled the Administrator account, or telling me I need to enable it.
Currently the box is checked: administrator account is disabled.
If I need to change that let me know AND let me know if I need to leave it enabled, or just switch it then switch back to 'disabled'.

    Re: Win 7 Administrater

I think we are thinking that if you enable the Admin account, you should be able to use it for downloading those forms. Make sure you password protect it. I have mine enabled, just for those type of issues.

OK, so ENABLE the administrator account, and leave it enabled; and that should still require me to approve but will LET me approve downloads.

I'm at work now but I'll try that asap. let you know...

Yes, enable it and log into it. See if you can then download your stuff.

Went back into the system and enabled the Administrator account; reboot; tried to download the HRBlock return...same message.

changed users to me, tried again: same message.

reset controls to highest setting where you have to give permission to do almost anything (both accounts) and tried again: same message. reset controls to default.

I'm at a loss here: don't know what to try next...

Were you ever able to resolve this issue? I’m having the same problem now.

The thread is 8 years old. I suggest you start your own post and describe what issues you are having.
