I just did a clean install upgrade of Win 7 (Home Premium) from Win XP...

Win 7 installed OK right after Win XP, but when I boot up, I get a message:

    Choose OS:

    Earlier version of Windows
    Windows 7

I have a 1 TB WD hard drive I installed both Win versions to (created some partitions after formatting)...could I have installed Win 7 in the wrong place?

Here's a readout from Easeus Partition Mgr:

    Disk 1 (MBR)
    D: NTFS /1.66 GB capacity/38.32 MB used/16.2 GB u7 unused/Status: None/Type: Primary
    C: NTFS/1.82 capacity/13.12 GB used/1.80 TB unused/Status: Boot/Type: Primary

    Disk 2 (MBR)
    *: NTFS/1.85 capacity/52.01 MB used/1.80 GB unused/Status:System/Type:primary
    *: Unalloc./929.66 GB capacity/0 bytes used/929.66 GB unused/Status:None/Type:Logical

I guess this must look like one hell of a scrambled egg--is there any way I can unscramble it, e.g., any necessary repartitioning and deleting Win XP without having to re-install Win 7?

You need to wipe the drive to remove XP, you didnt do that. You can't easily "unscramble it. You need to go to ADVANCED when it asks you where to install the operating system and wipe ALL the partitions, then select the C drive and Windows will offer to format and prepare it for you. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=25831

Well, this is an upgrade, so you can't wipe out Win XP...on the other hand, Microsoft
doesn't let you do a straight upgrade from XP to 7...this is probably why Win 7 installed itself
    on the second hard drive...

You're supposed to be able to do it with a utility on the Win 7 install CD called the Easy Transfer Utility, but the transfer involves a "machine-to-machine" procedure which makes it confusing if you have only one computer!

    Hi,
What MA refers to is correct, wether this is an upgrade or retail, the windows easy transfer tool is there for you to transfer your files and programs via cd/dvd/usb flash drive or an external HDD.

You need to boot into XP and use the transfer tool to transfer your data via one of the ways suggested... (remember that installed programs will only work on win7 if you have the relevent software activation keys)...

Was this upgrade just a key bought over the internet or a install disc from Microsoft. If it is an install disc you need to do a fresh install and format/delete the partition with xp on and clean install win 7, then install the easy transfer tool and transfer your programs/software and files.

My copy of Win 7 is a Microsoft install disc...

I have no data to transfer from Win XP, as I reinstalled it over a crippled install of Win 7--how does that affect the use of the Easy Transfer Tool, which seems
to be a necessary component of the Upgrade process?

I have backed up many, many video files to an external hard drive, but I'll restore those to my system once Win 7 is up and running....

    Thanks

    Hi ColKorn,
Use this as a guide on how to do a clean format/install ofyour OS...

As for the easy transfer utility built into Win 7, you only need that if you plan on transfering your data/programs/software and files from another OS as there can be conflicts if the utility is not used as it changes the the data's format to be adaptable to the new OS.
