Win 7: Driver install causes boot BSOD

    I'm running a fresh install of Win7

I added an old PCI GeForce FX 5200 PCI card to my system for basic dual monitors... I downloaded the forceware drivers for Vista32 thinking they'd be compatible

When I rebooted I was greeted with a BSOD PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

The primary code was 0x6B and all the hex codes within the parens were 0x00

I cannot boot into safe mode / last known / normal

I have tried the auto repair with the Win 7 disk and it tells me it can't fix the issue but claims BAD_DRIVER as the culprit

So, my question is, how can I remove this bloody driver from my system within recovery console so I can get back up and running again?

    Thanks for the help

A suggestion! Go into control panel then system then hardware then into device manager, double click the card and then delete its driver and reboot. The see if Windows can get the card running without that driver, many cards work fine on the windows generic drivers. If you can not do this pull the card then delete the driver after rebooting.

Phil: Thanks for the reply... That would be my preferred option but I cannot boot into normal mode or safe mode and therefore cannot access the control panel / hardware manager / mmc / etc... My only option is the recovery console command line

Then like I said power down and pull the card and reboot that may allow you to get at things.

Phil: I will give that a try when I get back into the office tomorrow. In the end it may just be easier to externally mount the hdd to pull the data off and then reinstall the OS and let windows update push the right driver.

Thanks for the idea, kind of embarrassed I hadn't thought of it to begin with =)

So I ended up externally mounting the drive to recover the data and did a clean install...

Windows update found the driver for the card and all went "well"

I did get one BSOD shortly after the driver installed and the screens flashed (typical during driver install)... was a 116 stop

A quick reboot and I was on my way... It is worth noting however that running DVI limited the card to 1280x1024... When I put the VGA adapter on and rebooted I was able to achieve the native resolution of 1440x900 for my 19"... Strange

Never the less I'm up and running and made a point to create a system restore point so I can get back a little faster next time =)

    Thanks for your help Phil
