robertbiferi I can't follow the rules

I am going to buy Win 7. Pro from Tigerdirect.com and they told me something I don't understand.

They told me if I buy Win 7. Pro OEM
I can install it but if I ever change my Motherboard or anything at all in the computer and then re start the computer it will not work.

They told me because Win 7. Pro OEM takes a check list of everything in your computer and if it does not match up when you re start the computer it wont work.

So I asked them what if I changed something in my computer but did a
Full Re Install of Win 7. OEM then would it not work because it will be like a new computer and it will be takinmg a new check list?

They told me it will not work you will have to buy win 7. OEM again.

please help telll me what is going on?

    Greetings, robertbiferi.

It's my understanding that an OEM Windows version is locked to the motherboard but not to peripheral components. A fairly typical discussion about the subject is illustrated in this Microsoft Answers thread.

    Hi

OEM is a minefield of advice and the advice you where given is correct in that OEM is tied to he hardware installed, and mainly the motherboard, however motherboards do fail and in many cases if your activation fails, you will need to call MSFT support up and explain that you had to change a motherboard due to a failure and they most often do re-activate it, but Microsoft support would want you to choose a like for like motherboard or one very close to it, you couldn't get a new generation motherboard and hope that they would activate Windows again. The Windows Activation servers know the licence serials used and the hardware ID so can if re-installed match up the codes and know that one is already registered with a specific hardware base.

OEM is mainly for system builders but in conversations I have had and in interviews with Microsoft managers they are happy for end users to use these builds, but must be reminded unlike Retail you have no support from Microsoft on any issues as you are effectively the OEM (as in Dell, HP, Acer etc)

One thing you cannot do as per the licence is install it on a new PC, if you say sell your old one that has Win7 OEM on it, then you need a new copy for the new PC, even if you uninstall it from the old PC.

So OEM while cheaper is not always the best route to take, Retail may do you better, if you are not likely to upgrade components (mainly the motherboard) in the next few years then this is a good route.

I have a Laptop I just got with Win 7. Home on it.
And my Desktop PC has Win XP pro.

If I use Clone Zilla Live to make a Clone of my Laptops Hard Drive can I then put that on my Desktop computer?

Then after it is on it just Un install all the drivers because I know they will all be for the Laptop and then Install all my Drivers I need for the Hardware of my Desktop Computer?

    Greetings, robertbiferi.

    Short answer: No.

If you wish, we can get into the specifics of the various reasons why you can't just clone a Windows installation to another machine.

Well I know that when you make a Clone it is for that Computer and if it goes down you can just do a faster install.

So I know it has all the drivers for that computer so I thought just install the Clone on another of my Computers and just un install the drivers and put the new computers drivers in.

Now if this wont work like you say then I think I know why?
Is it because every time you install win it send a Number code to Microsoft to tell it this computer is ok to use it? And this person got this win with this computer?

    Or am I missing something?

    Legality/validation issues exist, of course.

    There are, however, other considerations:

    1. Will the desktop PC handle Windows 7? The machine has to be checked for compatibility with the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

    2. A clone of an operating system installation is not the same as installing the OS. There are myriad operations that are performed when installing an operating system, background tasks that mesh different parts of the OS with different parts of a computer. I could never trust an operating system that was layered on top of a machine, instead of integrated with a machine.

    3. You stated: "un install the drivers and put the new computers drivers in". If it could only be that simple! I can't begin to comprehend what issues would occur attempting to do that - the handshake problems between the motherboard's chipset and Windows alone would probably be enough to bring the computer to its knees.

When i find time, I'll list more reasons why I don't think this is a good idea - be patient, and I'm sure others here will jump on board.

    win 7. help

I have win xp pro 32 bit and I was going to get win 7. 64 Bit because this way my OS can see all my 64 Bit parts and all of my 4. GB memory.

And I was not going to pay more money for the Retail even if it comes with Support that you can call in for.

I never never never got through before so I was going to get the OEM verson and save the money.

Amd I right that I can do a Full format and install of win 7. Home with the me geting the OEM?

    Re: win 7. help

First off I would advise you to run the windows 7 compatibility tool ....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

and check to see if your systems hardware/software is infact compatible for your new OS...

If it is then the answer is yes you can format and install an OEM copy of the desired OS .... in Windows 7 you must do a "Custom Install" as this will format the drive for you.

    Re: win 7. help

I do not think I have to run the tool to see if win 7. Home 64 Bit can run on my system because when I made it I have put

    AMD 64 Bit Athlone CPU
Tow sticks of DDR2. 800 MHz eatch stick with 2. GB
Hard Drive SATA 2. 500 GB
    My Motherboard is Hypertransport 3.0

The onlt thing is my Programs I use every day are 32 Bit because they came out before all this 64. Bit stuff did.
Please tell me if this is not what you ment??

And what do you meen I will have to do a costum install with win 7. Home OEM?
I thought you did what you do with even win xp you put the disk in and it formats the drive you pick and so on and asks you things am I off on how win 7. does it?

    Re: win 7. help

To do a clean install with win 7 you need to click on "custom install" otherwise it will install over the top of your XP and place it in a folder called "windows old". The method of install has changed from the way it is done in XP, but is very easy, just boot as you would with an xp disc but click on custom to do a full format of your drive.
You will not have any problems with your hardware but I can forsee that you will with the software that you use, i would still run the compatibility tool, at the least it will give you a heads up on wether or not your software can installed also.

And I use Movie Studio 8.0 by Sony and it was for win xp 32 Bit but win 7. I thought can run all win xp programs and 32 Bit?

    Re: win 7. help

    Hi
if you instal win 7 without a full format you will still be able to use your old xp software/files and folders which will be stored in the .windows old folder in your new program files, But you will not be able to run XP 32 bit on a Win 7 64 bit system as there will be conflicts in drivers for the hardware.

Please take time to read through the link that what Plodr posted.....

    Re: win 7. help

Yes to question 1 and yes to question 2.

Did you also look at the links posted and especially the Windows 7 upgrade advisor as not running this can cause you issues if your PC or some of the hardware does not have drivers for Windows 7 64bit or some of your software may not be compatible as well, the upgrade advisor can list any issues you may have.

Yes you will have to do a full new format and install of Windows 764bit as it will not install over a 32bit version of Windows.
