win 7 laptop wint start

Hi. My friend brought his toshiba laptop over for me to look at as it wont start up. I can access bios ok and tried resetting to defaults but still wont start. I set the boot order to boot from cd/dvd first and tried booting from the win7 disk so I could do a clean reinstall but it wont boot. I cant access safe mode either. It will start briefly in safe mode but then shuts down immediately saying that its doing it to protect the system. I also tried Dariks boot and nuke but again it wont boot up. Any suggestions?

 

It only shuts down from safe mode. Very briefly flashing the blue screen of death but not long enough to read all the text at that time. When trying to boot from cd or doing normal startup it just hangs with the mouse cursor on the screen. When trying normal startup it displays the windows logo then that dissappears, then nothing. Just the black screen with the cursor.
I managed to get the windows repair screen up and ran that and it just ran for 3 days and never finished until I turned it off.

 

Do you get any kind of recovery screen if you press the zero key while powering on the computer?

Edit: this option takes you back to a factory state.

You may want to try an install from a USB flash drive. Download Win2Flash and see if you can preform a install from the USB flash drive.

One other thought if you hit F12 during the Toshiba screen do you get a boot menu where you can choose to boot from CD?

Edit: Another thought when you are at the safe mode choice screen, can you try both Last Know Good Configuration to see if any luck. If not choose Disable Restart on Error and see if you get a blue screen you can read.

Ok. I just did the wintoflash thing and went into bios on the laptop to set to boot from USB but it doesnt have that option! Now Im a bit stumped!

 

Is there a USB option when you press F12?

Ok. It came up with "windows is loading files" and a progress bar, then the windows logo..then back to the black screen with cursor and doing nothing.

 

It may be that you have to zero out the drive first. You will need another flash drive. Download the bootable version of Partition Wizard. Then download YUMI. Start it from an admin account. Scroll down to Partition Wizard and then point it to your download location and select Create. Partition Wizard has the option to wipe the disk.

Edit: Even thought the site says Partition Wizard 5, 7.1 should also work.

 

Ok. I'll have to borrow another flash drive as I only have the one. I'll give that a go tomorrow and get back to you.

I forgot to mention that YUMI requires a FAT32 format of the flash drive. The program does allow you to format. Just make sure you do this to the flash drive and not your hard drive.
