I have a pc running Win7 RC. I built the pc months ago, but did not install a permanent OS. With Win7 now available for sale, I bought the OEM version from NewEgg.com to save a few bucks from the retail version.

My question is, I'm reading on the windows package about using the OEM Preinstall Kit (OPK).

Since I'm not a professional builder, do I need to install this OPK? I'm really a novice who wanted to see if I could build a machine from scratch, which I did, now I just want to install the OS, finally.

    Thanks for any assistance.

With an OEM install it's tied to the motherboard so if your motherboard dies you can't reactivate windows. You can transfer your license to a new pc. You can however reinstall as many times as you want on the same pc and motherboard.

    thanks pclover,

so I don't have to install or use the OEM preinstall kit? I've read what it is, but not sure I need to use it since I'm not reselling the pc I'm installing Win7 on.

I don't think that would be necessary.

The OPK is designed for large--scale system retailers to set up automated installations of an OS (from what I can remember) with their own custom settings and options, and to make sure that the system is activated and to give the user the chance to accept the windows licence agreement. Thus you will not need to install it.
