Win 7 password problem

When I got a preloaded Win7 laptop I knew zero about Win7. (I later learned that Win7 has very limited commonality with XP) I decided to set up the finger swipe security. I'm the only one who uses the laptop, so I am, of course, default administrator.

Either I didn't actually install a password or forgot to write it down.

I'm sure the day will come when I need the password. Is there any way that, once I've logged in by finger swipe, I can access the actual password - assuming I put one in?

Do a Google search - lots of ways to recover/reset the password.

You could create another admin account on the machine. Logout and login to that account. From there you can change the password on the first account.

Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Manage another account > Create new account

Uh, excuse me?? I merely suggested something the OP could've done by himself. Since I don't know exactly what this site's rules are about help in recovering passwords, I wasn't about to go further. Apparently, your username is quite apropos.

I A-L-W-A-Y-S try to find what I need before coming here, because there are people who come here not to give help but to chew people out for not being as smart as them. Of course they never put it in those words. But they always say it in a way that simply makes a questioner seem like some lazy idiot.

If you hate it so much helping people, why do you come on a help forum? :boxing

Thanks. There was a time when I might have thought of that, but a stroke at 47 turns your brain into chicken wire.

Question. I can already log in by finger print. Does that not give me the same control as a new account? I have never found (or recognized) a place where password editing is even an option. Apparently another admin is just another user to the second admin?

Well, I've workeed this out, altho it took a while. Win 7 kept telling me the password I entered didn't match in both boxes. Then it would pop up another notice saying Windows can't change a password. Huh?

It's not like I've never entered duplicate passwords before... But finally it took and I've now got a password on the admin account. In fact I've set up and kept 2 admin accounts - just in case. Now I know that when it DOES have a password it tells you that right on the screen. This the kind of thing that is very simple, but if you don't have a password and if you don't know it does that there's no way to get through it. Of course people who already know that cannot imagine anyone new to Win 7 not knowing it. %-)

Altho Win 7 has some things that are better than XP, I still don't care for it.

Maybe I'm missing something here - are you still having a problem? :confused

Are you able to log into an alternate admin account and change the original account's password or not?

Let us know, we'll try to work the problem with you... :)

    Thanks. I appreciate your inquiry.

I have it pretty much working, but something doesn't seem right. Usually I can log in with no problems using either of the admin accounts I've set up. But there have been a couple of times when I've gotten an error. It hasn't happened enough times to be able to ask about it without someone saying I didn't ask in a proper geeky manner.

It has been when I used the finger swipe and I think maybe it's after I have used the other admin account to get in. I mess around with "other account" sign in options and eventually I get it to work. But I can't give a detailed/accurate description of things so I don't desturb the anti-dummy watch dogs.

There was a time when I could start on an issue and knowledgable people knew what questions to ask me to move through a solution. But now you have to ask expertly or you get your leg chewed - GO STUDY HOW TO ASK A QUESTION PROPERLY! H___ if I knew the issue well enough to do that I probably wouldn't have to ask. But the issue is still there - you must ask your questions in techno-geek-babble form or get flamed.

You go to a medical doctor and he asks you questions. If a genius computer doctor doesn't know how to ask a dummy the right questions why is he considered a genous? If he's too lazy to do it why does he bother even coming here? It's like an elite club. If you have dumb questions just go away. Very tiring.

I don't think anyone here is gonna "chew your leg" or flame you, you may get a request for more info. ;) I think the moderation team would spank anyone doing that quickly...

Many times people don't know what to include on their first report of a problem and it will draw a request for more info. Remember that in a text based medium, nuance of language is hard to discern at times. Add to that the fact some folks here are English as a Second Language (ESL).

I'm not a fan or user of finger swiping hardware/software, but it seems as if the problem is there from you say.

I'll ask you another question and leave this for someone who knows about this to answer you.

The finger swipe you attempt: Is it tied to one account? Do you have select the username before swiping? Any possibility that you are swiping on the wrong username?
