HP Pavilion PC with AMD 64 Phenom Processor, will not load windows 7. PC was on and started shutting down and restarting at sign-in on it's own. It would not be from an update as I have it set to view updates before installing them. I could get to Safe Mode originally but once I tried a restore point it restarted and doesn't get as far as it did. I cannot get to safe mode any longer. It tells me I need to repair start up, but as it tries to load it crashes and restarts again. It will not start from my Win recovery disks at all nor an Ubuntu Lynix disk. It will read the first page of Ubuntu but when it tries to load after selecting 'run without making changes to my computer', it restarts again. The HP diagnostics passes all drives, memory and the processor. I am not running duel startups, I only have the one OS. I can get to BIOS but I have no clue what I am doing in there. The only warning or error I have ever gotten was to run the repair start up, but it didn't work. Could this be my motherboard? Please help.

You say you cant boot from your Windows 7 disc? Go into your bios, look for Sata mode. There should be two options: AHCI or IDE. If it is on IDE windows 7 wont boot properly.

Not the problem. It is ACHI as it has been for the last year and a half. I took the HD out of it yesterday and put it into the family 32 bit computer and it took some start-up repairs and a restore and the HD is fine now. If I put it or the HD from the 32 bit CP into the 64 bit HP Pavilion it does the same thing, tries to start and crashes and does a a restart so I have it turned off now so it doesn't mess up any other HDs. I ran the 64 bit win 7 HD on my 32 bit CP long enough to get everything backed up. Is that bad for the computer? I have it off now waiting to see if I need a power supply, motherboard or what?

Thanks for any other ideas you may have.

A tech at our local internet provider tested everything and it is the motherboard that has gone out as I suspected. I have placed a motherboard in a computer before, I don't know how to shop for one. What do I need to know to get the correct motherboard and do I need to get a CPU with it? I have looked on newegg where I like to shop for memory, HDs etc. But this 56 year old grandmother just got in a little over her head with this one. :-o

CPU is probably fine, but I would suggest you get the same motherboard as what you have. That way you shouldn't have any problems with just reinstalling the hard drive.

Have you tried to simply just reinstall Windows? I've had plenty of times where the Windows files ended up being messed up somehow and a simple reinstall made everything better (and no the computers did not die on me a week later, haha. They still work to this day so no bad parts).

Thank you so much TimW. I know what my motherboard is, yet I cannot find one. Here are the specs: http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bi...Document.jsp?objectID=c01635688&printver=true

I found one seller out of Hong Kong at TradeKey. I have never purchased from there before. Newegg does not have one. Do I find something compatible? How? Thanks again.

fattwinkie, the motherboard is shot, it doesn't even boot from a disk, now video is gone too, the fan stops running, and the power switch is rendered inoperable, the only way to shut it off is to pull the plug. I swapped out the power supply, it is fine. There is no reinstalling windows. Thanks for trying. ;)

This is, I think, the closest to your current motherboard that I saw listed on Newegg but Overstock or Amazon may be less costly overall.

Don't jump to buy yet, others may find a closer match or potential issues with this 'board.

satrow thank you very much. I waited and as no one else has posted and I have looked at your option, I believe I will make my purchase. Thank you so much, I wouldn't have known which Motherboard to replace it with without your advice. Much appreciated!!!

What EVER, lol j/k. Nah, like I said there have been cases where I've had those exact symptoms and it was just a bad install of Windows. Reinstall did perfectly. In your case, your right, no way was a simple reinstall going to fix no video, no power button, and everything else rofl.
