Hey my friends, my buddy was given a Windows 7 OEM disk by my brother. What I need to know is, how does he go about getting it activated because he doesn't have a product key.

If the disk was for a Dell or any other major maker of PC's then it is a proprietary disk and cannot be used on any other system, the disk checks for usage and hardware on the new machine.

That said, at MG's we cannot help you to hack or crack an activation code.

If it's a legitimate/unused disk then you can always call MS to get an activation code.

If he doesn't have a product key and lets suppose he have a legit Windows installed on that disk, then there are plenty ways to get the product key. You can try with SterJo Key Finder it will find your product ID and product key. You could then contact microsoft with your ID and activate your system.

I hope my answer will help you solve this issue.

If the disk was given to him by your brother (as you say) then surely your brother has the key!

No , he wasn't looking for a hack or crack, I told him to call Microsoft, and he was just wondering if there was another LEGAL way without waiting on the phone forever for Microsoft. Thanks for all the help.

My understanding of OEM disc is that if he is installing it on the same brand computer that he should not have to enter a key.

So if I have a Dell computer and I am using a Dell reinstall (OS) disk it should just go ahead and activate. Never asking for a key.

Is your friend's situation that he used the OEM disc but it still is asking for activation?

I don't know how to remedy the situation, I just want to know if I have got it right that it is the same brand computer.

Hey sach2, my buddy was told that he needed to use the product key off his computer and I told him that usually doesn't work. He never ran the Win 7 OEM disk yet so I don't know if it asked for a Product Key. He has an HP running XP SP3. I told him give the disk back and go buy his own. I'm not sure what he did as of yet, but he was not trying to get a hack, I told him I would ask here because I personally know he would get an honest answer from you guys and gals. Thanks again sach2.

If the OEM disc he got from your brother is an HP disc it can't hurt to try. I think HP ties their discs to certain models though, so it may not work. I've only done it on Dells but they tend to give more generic discs that work on any Dell as long as the version of XP that was shipped with the two computers was the same. (I'm only going by old P4s which is what I have had to experiment with reloading OS on. I haven't bought any more recent OEM computers.)

I've never had luck with using the sticker from the PC to get a code accepted when using a downloaded disc.

If it doesn't work then he knows he has to get a new disc and key. Can't hurt to try.
