    Hello,
I recently had the system security malware and went through the malware removal thread posted here. It took care of most of it, but it didn't totally remove it so a friend said to try the microsoft maleware scanner. After it did its scan, i rebooted only to not be able to reboot.

My system boots to the screen with two options...repair or boot normally. Booting normally just reboots back to that screen and repairing stays in the 'windows is loading files' screen and does nothing.

I found my windows 7 boot disk but i cannot find my win 7 install disk. When trying to repair through the start up disk, it cannot repair due to 'system volume on disk is corrupt Repair action=file system repair (chkdsk) result: error code = 0x1f. i tried running chkdsk /f in the command prompt but not sure if that had any effect, or would have.

When try to find a restore point it cannot find one. Also, under the system recovery options screen, it doesn't give me any OS options to restore.

I do not mind just reformatting but there are a few files and pics I would like to move to a external drive. So...some questions....

    1. Can i use the command prompt to transfer files to an external drive?

    2. Could my vista 64 install disk repair the files enough to get me to my files?

    3. I do have system back up disks but i assume they would rewrite everything and I would lose my current files?

I am currently downloading linux live because i was told it can get into my files to transfer them...actually its ubuntu live. Will this work?

    Thanks for your help.

Try running chkdsk/r at the command prompt and see if that works.

This does not help with the bootup problem but to get your files that you need off the drive. Download Puppy linux. I would download v5.28. Burn the iso using Imgburn or similar program and then transfer the files to an external hard drive.

If you are willing to go for a larger download (535.21 MB), you could download Hirens boot cd. Burn the iso and boot the CD. Select MiniXP at startup and it will boot to a minimal version of XP, allowing you to transfer your files to your external drive.

If you had your install disk, you could run a sfc /scannow to repair any corrupt files. Do not use the Vista disk for this command, that will not work.

    Thnx for your time.

The ubuntu live disk worked. I am able to get into the files I need and now have internet on the comp.

Are there any programs that can now help in fixing my win 7 start up...now that I can actually get into the internet although it is under ubuntu?

I can now rest a little easier knowing my files have been moved to my external...I can relax and hopefully find my 7 install.

If chkdsk/r did not work, you are going to need the install disk. Or, if you are positive that you have all of your data off the computer, you could take your computer back to its factory state if your computer came with a recovery partition. Is the computer from an OEM like HP?

I did find my win 7 install disk. I tried booting from the disk but am gettin an error from the windows boot manager. Windows encountered a communication error with a device connected to the computer. I disconnected my external drive and ttried again but it still gives me the error. It does say it could be because a failing hard disk or disk drive...but they seem fine.

I guess a full wipe and restall is in my future.

    Thanks again Tgell!
