    Hi
I originally posted in the Malware thread as I thought my PC may have been infected, ran through everything there and it all appears to be clean.
I do however have the occasional icon pop up on the desktop that is being downloaded from somewhere.
Here is the original thread: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1805556#post1805556

    My System Details are:
BIOS: Phoenix Tech ASUS P5N-E SLI Rev 0703
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 6.01.7600 x86
    Processor: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
    Graphics: Dual NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT (1.7 GHz, 1GB DDR2) x2
    Memory: 3.25GB (8GB installed)

    My problem is:
PC now takes ages to start, runs very slow, flicks between Aero and normal modes and the processor seems to spike. Sometimes I will get a BSoD but I have been unable to find the actual error log.
After about 10 minutes the system seems to stabilise, Aero flicks on and stays on and the system is fast and stable to use.

I have run a "MiniToolBox" scan that seems to show a PreFetch database issue, I have attached the results of that scan to this post.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Best wishes
    Richard

Hi my friend , first thought of me

    you can go to

Start - Run msconfig - Ok
You can go to startup tab removing any boxes - Apply - Ok

Windows is asking you to restart your machine - go for it
this way is good to speed up your boot

Second thought , maybe there is either hdd or ram failure , you can download this cd

    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

    burning it with

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/ImgBurn_d4870.html

there is many tool in this useful cd ( keep it after tests ) which helps you to test your memory with memtest86 even you have to find the manufacturer of hdd testing your hdd

    go to Start
    Right click to My Computer
    Properties
    Hardware tab
    Device Manager
    Disk Drivers

there is a code of your hdd like this

    HDS722516VLSA80

    for instance :wave

    Hi
    Thanks for you reply.
I have burned off a copy of HirensBoot CD.

Can you tell me what I need to do to test the memory, I ran memtest and it said "your memory is low" (8gb installed) and then seemed to stall.

Also, can you tell me which of the utilities to use for testing my hdd please.

    Thanks in advance...

    Just an update:
Managed to run the MemTest properly and that's all ok.

Turned off all Startup programs and it's still the same, very slow to load up and stabilise.

Can you tell me how to check the PreFetch and repair that if necessary? (as per the original file I uploaded at the start of the thread that pointed to errors in the Prefetch database.

I disabled PreFetch as you suggested and it has indeed sped up the startup process to what it used to be.
It has also minimised the cpu spikes too and the system feels much more stable. It also doesn't flick between Aero and normal display modes.

Is it also worth disabling SuperFetch, or is that a different process?

Thanks very much for that, if I get any recurrence of the problem I will let you know.

Awesome thanks... I won't go near SuperFetch ;)

I'll keep an eye on how the startups go, thanks in the meantime.
