JimLL I can't follow the rules

Right in the middle of writing a document in Open Office the system suddenly closed Open Office down, as well as a related app that was running and said it was going to do some system updates. The screen went black and everything shut down - soon to restart what appeared to be a normal boot sequence, then some other nonsense I was too stunned to note.

None of the stuff I had going was reactivated.

SURELY? there is a way to prevent this utter nonsense?

Turn off windows automatic updates. Go to Programs>Windows Update. In the left pane select Settings and in the dropdown box do not select "Install updates Automatically". Select "Download Updates but let me choose when to Install them" or "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".

If WU requires a restart it does warn you that it will restart in 15 minutes and give you the option to restart now. You must have missed it. But tgell's suggestion is preferable.
