Trying to clean a computer for a friend, with help from the folks at the malware removal forum here:http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1669167&posted=1#post1669167

Tried to fix an infected MBR in the RE. Typed in "Bootrec.exe /fixmbr" the message came back as "Operation was successful" etc.

When I tried to boot back into windows it said "windows was unable to start" or something along those lines.

Now I am unable to boot up windows into normal(or safe) mode. Therefore I couldn't run an MBRcheck to see if the boot was still infected.

I think I did everything right up until that point, especially since it said operation was successful, but windows won't boot back up.

I tried windows system repair, but it said it was unable to repair.

One thing, when I tried to repair, the only version of windows I saw was in D:/windows--when I clicked to fix this, it said unable to repair.

I'm pretty sure windows is on the C: drive on this computer.(Acer laptop, Windows 7)

The message said "if you don't see your version of windows listed, please load drivers".
There's a button to load drivers, which takes you to a bunch of system files, but I'm not sure which to load, I've been on a mac system for awhile now.

He doesn't have the orig windows discs that came with the laptop. He doesn't believe he had them at all, but he's not sure.

Any idea's or am I out of luck?

    Thank you.

Acer win 7 laptops, as most current computers sold, don't come with disks. You were supposed to go into the Acer Program, then select Acer eRecovery Management and create your own recovery disks for situations when windows will not boot or you need to replace a dead hard drive.

If you can read the serial number on the bottom of the case, you should be able to use a windows 7 disk to do a clean install using the serial that came with the Acer.
