Have made a cd with win xp, and then win 7 wont read it. Win 7 wants to reformat the cd

If, on the other hand, i make a cd on win 7, win xp will read it, but xp will not write anything additional to the cd

I assume that this is because of the UDF and ISO formats

SInce i have both xp and win7 at home, i would like the cds to be used by both.

I would assume that i need to tell win7 how to read and use the mastered file system, instead of what it wants to use

    Any ideas?

If it is a data CD, you need to look at the burning software you are using and make sure the following two items are selected.
    1. Close the session. (this allows any computer to read what has already been written - it doesn't matter what version of windows)
    2. Leave the CD open. (This allows more data to be written to the CD at a later time).

I have a data CD on which I burn pictures from my camera card. I think I've added to this CD from 3 different computers running windows 2000 and windows XP.

Not using any software. Simply copying files from a folder onto the cd

If i copy it from win7, and then i can read it on xp, but cannot add anything on xp

If i copy it from xp, cd will not be read on win7

    Hi,

Try using the same software on both computers. CDburnerXP would be my choice to try.

Start with a fresh CD and burn a few folders then see if both machines can read it in Explorer and add to it using the program.

This is probably a lot more than you want to know but it outlines all the problems associated with using XPs built in burning software.

If you have music on the CD, rip it, then upload the files to dropbox.com - you can create a free account if you do not have one - I believe the accounts start at 2GB.

Then download them back to the Windows 7 computer.
If data files, use the same process.

Follow the law where needed - I am not a lawyer, you may have to look up the legality issues if you have non-original content or if there is any doubt.

They seem to be contrary to each other.

You would use them seperately. I'm sure that it was just a typo by plodr listing the two possibilities. Answer to OP's problem is covered by plodr and sach2 if everything is read. :)

NO, I use them at the same time: Close the session but let the CD open.

If you close the session and close the CD, if the CD isn't full you can no longer burn additional data to it.
If you let the session open, then the computer sees nothing on the CD.

Isnt there just some setting i can set in win7 so that it uses the old file system?

Dumb thoughts. Usually I burn as a mirror image. XP should see a burn in ither Fat32 or NTFS. Win7 is NTFS. I use Nero to do this.
