I just bought 8 gb of RAM for my MB running win 7 64-bit. I was using the default 4gb. After installing the new RAM, I kept getting a blue screen error while windows was loading up. Is there something in the BIOS I need to adjust? I have an ASUS M4N72-E MB that can support up to 16 GB RAM. I removed the memory sticks one at a time to see if I could find a bad chip, but they all do the same so I am guessing they aren't ALL bad. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Welcome :)

So it still boots from the original RAM only?

What happens when you switch the old RAM for new?

The 4gb of old work fine. As soon as I put in all 4 2gb chips, Windows 7 loads up, goes to desktop, then bluescreen, then memory dump. I am currently reformatting my computer and am hoping all will go well after i get win 7 reloaded. If not, are there any BIOS settings I should adjust for the newly added 8gb of RAM?

Switch off, replace the original RAM sticks with the same number of new RAM sticks in the same slots. Boot, what happens?

Is anything overclocked? Have you set the BIOS to defaults yet?

Here is the whole scenario. No BIOS settings have been changed by me. All are at default. When I had the old 4gb of RAM running, PC worked fine. I pulled all 4 1xGB chips out and put in 4 new 2xGB Black Diamond PC 6400 800FSB for a total of 8 GB, up from 4 GB. After first blue screen popped up, I removed the 8 GB and put the 4 GB back in. No blue screen with the 4 GB RAM. Put in the 8 GB and instant blue screen after windows loaded up. Removed each 2gb chip two at a time to see if I might have a bad one. All chips cause the blue screen error after a few minutes of Windows running. So, proceeding to format drive. The reformat is probably premature, but I am wondering if there is a BIOS setting I need to change to get the RAM to work. Oh, and not overclocking anything.

Anyone have any thoughts in regards to this problem?

So the RAM sticks are different in size, ok.

I'm inclined to think that the 'new' RAM is not compatible with your 'board and would check the ASUS Support site for this RAM's compatibility with your 'board. Also check for a new BIOS update - read what the later updates fix, RAM compatibility may be one of them. Unless there's a spcific mention of an update for RAM compatibility, I'd not rush to update the BIOS.

You can try resetting the BIOS to defaults.

Sticks are compatible with the board according to the ASUS webstie and Memory-up.com, which is who I bought the new RAM from. I'm not having any problems running DBAN Nuke to reformat my drive, so could it have been a windows 7 problem and the reformat/reinstall will correct the issue? I will also set BIOS to defaults as soon as reformat is complete. Thanks for the help btw.

Ok, check with the ASUS Support site that you have the correct BIOS revision level installed for that RAM then, you may have an early BIOS that needs updating.

I'll check that probably tomorrow since it takes FOREVER for DBAN to reformat drives. Does a wonderful job though. If that isn't it, any other ideas?

I'd test the PC out with a live Linux CD like Mint to test the basic hardware if a new install fails.

And test all those 2GB RAM sticks singly.
