win 8 laptop won't boot

My sons laptop has developed a problem where it won't boot win 8. The laptop is a Medion Akoya P6815/A35FE MD98296 with nvidia geforce 650m graphics and i would appreciate some advice on what to try to fix it.

when powered up it says auto repairing fails to auto repair then goes to a blue screen with various options for refresh, boot options etc. (*1)

I tried to boot to safe mode but just ended up in loop (*1) again.
I tried system restore but it said there were no restore points.

I tried to do a system refresh and this seemed successful to the point I got to the Win 8 boot screen, however after I logged in the screen went black and then alternated between black and a dark grey with no mouse. I left it like that for several minutes but nothing changed. (*2)
I powered the laptop off and on again but just got to point (*2) (without the Win8 login screen this time)

After another reboot attempt it said it was trying to repair bad disk errors which took a while but after this attempted and failed auto repair. I tried to do another refresh but it could not do this.

Disc errors, the drive is bad. How old is it, and where was it purchased?

It is about 11 months old and was bought directly from Medion online.

 

Not to butt in, but I think brownizs would suggest the warranty if that is available.
Post again if the manufacturer is not helping.
