    Hey whats up!

first i need to say im not a real computer wizard..
    please keep that in mind..

not stupid..but not a linux geek either rolleyes
    (no offense..)
just thought the real smart people use linux

    anyways...
    WINDOWS 98 !!!!
its gota work on Win 98 !!!

    whats a good Freeware program..
or the name of a few of them..
(if there even is any or even one...)

that i can use to take 1 new hard drive..
and put my whole other hard drive on to it..OS and all..

like take my 9 GB hard drive that has my win 98 OS on it..
and take that whole Win 98 system and all..

and put it onto a new 20 GB hard drive...
    and like plug it in..wala!!..
    BOOM!!!...
running like it never knew it was just cloned..
or had the major heart transplant..

or what ever its called doing something like that..
    mirror..clone...copy...

where i could plug either Hard Drive in to that computer..
    and have them work..

    hope i asked that right

    Easeus Disk Copy
    HDClone
    Digital Dolly

There's three! They're all free, and I've used the first two with great results. All of 'em require you to create a boot floppy, or burn a bootable CD. Then you boot to the program and follow the on screen prompts. Easy!
    :-D
I hope this helps! Good luck!

(the source drive would be set as master -this is the original 9gb drive- and the destination drive would be set as slave -the 20gb drive- on the same cable; refer to the drive maker's web sites for jumper settings for master/slave; many drive makers also have free hard drive imaging/copying/cloning software for download)

    Hey DlB

thanks for answering my post buddy..

i kinda wana ask a few questions..just to make sure i do things right here..

i know about the Master-Slave jumper setting stuff things..so im good to go on that bit thanks..

i am reading about Easeus Disk Copy on their web site..
yeah i thought i should read a lil on how to use EASEUS Disk Copy before i use it and try doing this..

yeah they kinda tucked the link to it,
way down at the bottom of their web page..
kinda really easy to miss if you woulden't know it was there..
heres the link to it if anyone might wana read on it too...
    http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/

    anyways...

i'll tell you what i did so far here..
to the new HD i wana put my old stuff on to..

first i Low-level formated the new HD..(20 GB Quantum fireball)
with the Maxator MaxBlaster 4.0 Dos tool thing...
(wrote Zeros to the whole disk)..

then i put a partation on it with Microsofts lil DOS f-disk thing..
(made it all just one primary partition 20Gb)

then i formated it too...same MS start up floppy disk thing...

what the heck is that called anyways??...
the Microsoft start-up disk thing with the lil fdisk tool..

    anyways...

so heres the thing i want to know..
when i was reading the "EASEUS/ Disk Copy" web page it said this bit here..

    Upgrading hard disks

Disk Copy is specially useful if you want replace the older smaller hard disk by a newer larger hard disk without having to install the Operating System and applications once again. The media used as destination should be of the same size as the source media or larger to ensure that all data will be copied.

ok i think i got that covered cause my new HD is bigger then my smaller orginal one..20GB new...9GB orginal...

****heres the bit im wondering about****
    it says this..
heres the web page im reading this from
    http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/

How to manage a partition after copying it?

Disk Copy only copies your disk/partition without any change.
It offers sector to sector copy,
which means you can get a same-size duplicate of partition as the original one.
So, you can not enlarge your partition with Disk Copy.

To manage your partition with more advanced features, please turn to EASEUS Partition Manager,
which can resize/move partitions and copy disk, copy partition freely in Windows System without destroying data.

    so what im asking is..
if DISK Copy...copies my 9GB partition without any change..
and i get a exact sector to sector duplicate..
    does that mean..
i'll have a 9 GB partition on my 20GB new HD..

and the other 11GB's wont be on that paration..
so i'll have to use another tool..to do some kind of partition manipulation?

im sorry if this seems like a silly question i never did this before..
i just thought its easier to ask questions to make sure..
    then to..
mess something up not knowing what im doing..

If you use Easeus, it will copy the whole 9gb drive to the 20gb. You didn't need to format and fdisk and partition the 20gb drive first, but it's better to be safe than sorry. The ened result will be a 9gb partition, and 11gb of unallocated space. You can then use a partition resizing tool (like Boot It-NG) to 'stretch' the 9gb partition to make full use of the entire drive. It's easy. Really. You can also use HDClone (linked to above). I haven't used it in some time; I remember it was fairly slow but I used it on a 250gb drive so a 9gb drive should take too long. I don't remember if the end result was the same as Easeus where you had to re-size the partition. I haven't used Digital Doly (linked to above) so I can't comment on it. Another free utility that I forgot to mention is CloneMaxx. I haven't used it in over 2 years, but it was able to copy even corrupt drives, drives that errored out using other cloning tools. But it was pretty slow. But that may have been due to the corruption. As I stated earlier, check the hard drive maker's web site(s). They usually have cloning tools also. I know that Western Digital has one, and I'm pretty sure Seagate does too. But at least one drive must be made by the company whose software you're using.
    Good luck!

I just checked the Seagate site; they have Disc Wizard that will copy your drives just fine. It should work with Maxtor drives too since Seagate bought out Maxtor a few years ago. If not, use MaxBlast. Both are free. DiscWizard will require you to burn a bootable CD. For a 'how-to' for DiscWizard, click this link. Some good general FAQ's with answers for DiscWizard (including how to create the bootable CD) can be found here. A link to the MaxBlast user guide in .pdf Adobe Reader format is available here. The .pdf user guide for DiscWizard is available here.

I hope this helps a bit!
    Good luck!

(I'm not sure if DiscWizard and/or MaxBlast are compatible with Win98; however, if you create the bootable CD on a WinXP/2000 computer, it should copy any drive regardless of the Windows version on it)

You've peaked my interest! ;) I'm still looking for different tools... hopefully I won't overwhelm you with options, but I just found SelfImage here at MajorGeeks. It's free, looks REAL easy to use (just look at the screen shot below), and should be OK with Win98....

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/screenshots/s/selfimage.jpg

So, you'd select Drive C: and 'check' the little circle next to "Drive" in the 'Input' section; select "None" in the 'Processing' section; and select Drive E: or whatever drive your 20gb drive is and check the little circle for "Drive" in the 'Output' section. Then click "OK". Now, I haven't used this program, so I'm assuming all this, but it looks easy. I plan on trying this app in the next few days just to see how it goes. ;)

I just found this at the SelfImage web site:
This means the end result will be the same as Easeus Disk Copy.... the 20gb drive will have a 9gb partition and 11gb of unallocated space, and again a partition resizing tool will be needed.

EDIT- I have a typo way above in post #4. I wrote "so a 9gb drive should take too long" but it really should say "so a 9gb drive should not take too long". :-o Ooooops.

You could try xxClone. Will copy to larger volume disk and is able to be made bootable with CoolTools (provided on xxClone install).Have used several times myself.

Sorry for mistake. Just checked and xxClone is not for Win98.

    Hey DlB..

Thanks Buddy For Posting your know-how knowledge..
    you seem pretty cool!!..

i like how you did a little extra and gave bunches of information..
    and followed up with some...THEN-SOMES...
    thats really COOL!!!..

yeah what im trying to do here is all new to me and is like a learning thing..
usually i always just re-installed everything and took a few days doing it..

i never knew you could do such things like making Exact copies of a HD
and just transfer it to a new HD..

REMEMBER IM DOING THIS in Windows 98se
yeah programs for 98 are getting fewer..
and a little harder to find..
the newer programs don't always support Win98..

yeah this little project im doing here...
is going to make me a little smarter..
    Thanks SO MUCH!!..
for helping me get to be a little smarter..and learn a new thing..

yeah DlB buddy your wicked cool in my book!!!

    anyways...

on your first Reply you taught me of the UNALLOCATED space thing..
the way Easeus would make a exact copy of my 9GB..
and that i would have to use another program..to streach my paration..

    you said try using..
    Boot It-NG..

i read about Boot It-NG on their web site
sounds like a pretty cool program for 35 Bucks...BUT!!!..
    i forgot to say..
im kinda hard-to-do and money aint flowing out of my pockets.

if i would use this program more then 1 or 2 times i might think of buying it..
but im not a TECH guy fixing computers for a living...
..and i probally would only use it 1 or 2 times...so..
i looked for another FREE-WARE program..
    thats kinda like that one.
where i can Strech a Partition..

so i was surfing around the net trying to find a Freeware program
    that would Resize my partition..

and found a pretty cool site that had BUNCHES of free stuff for..

Free Partition Managers, Editors and Recovery (Partitioning Software)
    and
Free Hard Disk Backup / Restore and Image / Cloning Utilities

heres the links if you want to check them out..
    http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/partitioneditors.shtml

    http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml

well to make a long story short..lol...

i ended up using EASEUS DISK COPY...
it took me a while to figure how to Burn the ISO image thing..
so i had a BOOT CD...(never did that before)..

    IT WORKED GREAT!!!..
    really easy to use!!!!..

Thanks so much for turning me onto it...

wonder why those web pages i found with the free stuff..
DIDN'T have Easeus Disk Copy in their stuff..
    anyways..

then i started reading alot on the paration thing..
it was really confusing for me..
    and i ened up using..

    GParted...BUT!!..
i ended up using it in this other CD Boot program thing called..
    SystemRescueCD..

because i coulden't figure out how to make it into a boot CD thing
just using the stuff from the GParted web site...

so i used SystemRescueCD which had Gparted in it
and it was a ISO thing..i just burned it to a disc

    but when i used it...
i had no idea what i was doing...

i have no idea how it really works...
it seems like a wicked cool thing to have..
if you know how to use all the things it has on it...
and how you can coustomize it and all..
but i have no idea how to really use it...

    i got it to work..
    I HAVE NO IDEA HOW..
    but
all i remember was reading something that said..
to use the graphic interface type in WIZARD

and then there was a bunch more things but they were like windows now
instead of the LINE comand stuff..(which i have no idea about)

    anyways...

i read the pages on the GParted web site..
    and found things with pictures...
i have no idea how i found them..

using open source stuff is hard to learn about sometimes..
its all jumbled..and they have all these links to stuff that makes no sense
    to NON-GEEK people...
    here...
the page i found that helped me most..
    it had pictures..lol...
    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/resizing.htm

it showed pictures on how to Resize a partation...
pictures work best for people that dont know much..lol..
    like me...lol...
    anways..

    it all worked out good..
THANKS SO MUCH DLB for helping me out..
and pointing me out in a direction to start at...

that Easeus disk copy was perfect..
and the Gparted thing that i found finally worked easy..
once i figured how to get to it..
yeah those pictures showing how to use it help out BIG TIME!!!
i could probally do this all again..in like 20 minutes..now...

    anyways..

    THANKS DLB!!!
    your wicked cool dude...
    later..
lol..keep your eyes open for me im sure i'll be asking again in Major geeks
for the answer to my next learning adventure....
