Updated Win 98 with 2 small security related Critical Updates. Upon restart I get a Fatal Exception Error 06 at 0020:00002030. Ran 2 tools I downloaded from this site to try to determine what error is but cannot determine or am not using tools properly. When I click through blue death I get error boxes starting with msgsvr32.exe. Have run RegSeeker in safe mode to disable all nonessential startup items. There was still an item in there related to the update that was trying to execute at restart. Disabled that. No luck. Ran RegSeeker cleaner in safe mode but hesitant to make deletions since I am unsure if running in safe mode causes the tool to find things it wouldn't normally find. I am certain the updates caused this but don't know how to reverse. Any help is greatly appreciated.

More info: I ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Norton and found nothing. The last time I tried to boot machine the error came up as "Explorer caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.exe at 0001:000087ed" These errors are showing up after I click through the login screen and the desktop shows up. It's as if there is a problem during the loading of startup items but i have disabled most everything.

You should be able to uninstall these updates by going to the Add/Remove Programs under the Control panel. Have you tried that?

Crisis averted. I had been unable to find them in the Add/Remove Programs. I went to the System Configuration Utility and looked in the Startup Items. There lurking in the list was one of the "critical updates" that came from Microsoft. I simply unchecked that item and the problem was solved. Apparently the machine doesn't like that update. It escaped my eye because I had used the RegSeeker to disable startup items and it wasn't there. I am stumped as to why items appear on some startup lists and not others elsewhere on the machine.

Glad to hear that you are up and running again :D

However, I don't think that you are clear yet.

The update 891711 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS05-002.mspx appears to me to be designed to always run at start-up and is currently running on my Windows machine. On my machine the program Kb89711 is executed after login. Without this update you will be vulnerable to the situation describe in the link.

Which version of Windows 98 are you using (that Windows 98 original first edition or second edition)?
