one of our old computers uses windows 98. it's been really messed up recently, running really slow, and the colors and resolution weren't right. every time i go to change the colors from 16 to 256, and change the resolution, the computer tells me to restart. so i do, and nothing changes. the colors can't be adjusted and the resolution can't be changed. i even tried using the windows disk to uninstall and reinstall windows (which didn't work) and nothing changed. so right now i'm stuck in a resolution even bigger than 800x600, and 16 colors (not 16 bit, 16 colors...)

please help. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you for your time.

    Tried reinstalling your video drivers?

I've seen some video cards have color limitations on your choice of resolution. Perhaps if you used 640x480, you could get 256?

On top of that, seems like you have a real old system, any chance you can upgrade to a better video card?

thank you both, we went and upgraded video cards and were able to change the colors and resolution.

    there's just one more problem:
whenever we boot, it says something along the lines of "you are missing a file that may be necessary to run windows, would you like to continue anyway?" i calls it "SYSTEM.INI," and it should be at C:windows\system\vshinit.vxd

this isn't really a big problem, because the computer still works fine and is displaying correctly. i'm just curious as to what it is. i'd like to get rid of the error message, but if i can't, that's okay, it's just slightly annoying.

thank you both again for your help.

That's a component of McAfee Viruscan, most likely leftover from an incomplete uninstall. Refer to the following for manual uninstallation:

I agree, you should download and install your display drivers again for your monitor and graphics card, that should do the trick. I had the same problem with my laptop about a year ago.
