How difficult is workgroup networking with windows 98? The main thing I need is a network printer and shared internet connection.

Workgroup setup with Win98 is relatively easier than you'd think. Since security level and complexity was not upto today's point, 98 settings are very simple.
If you want to share your files and printers, make sure your workgoup name matches. Also, on both machines, make sure "Microsoft network" and "file and printer sharing" is installed and checked. Installing NetBios is a good idea in 98 environment too.
However, before we go on, we need to check your physical settings first.
Are you connected to a "Hub/switch" on both PCs? or are you connected to "Gateway/Router"?
What type of ISP do you have? dsl/cable/dial-up?
