I have a win 98 machine that will not boot. It goes right to dos. if i type "win", it says that "the program cannot be run in dos mode" or something like that.

    any suggestions?

    Boots into DOS .

Go to Start, Shutdown, Restart in MSDOS.

You'll be at c:\windows. Type in cd\ and press Enter.

Once at the c prompt type in the following > ren autoexec.bat autoexec.moo (acutally any 3
letter will do for the last part...which I have chosen to be moo) then press Enter.

    You'll be at a c prompt again.

Then type ren config.sys config.moo press Enter.

    You'll be at a C prompt.

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL or just shut down the system and turn it back on.
That will get you out of a DOS Loop most of the time.

That worked! However, whenever i reboot, it starts happening again.

I rename the files and then it seems as though when windows runs it creates the autoexec.bat file again.

Go back to a good copy of the registry .

Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMI pool message comes on ) or Press
Ctrl during bootup , depends on your computer .

Select , Safe mode Command prompt

    After the C prompt , type , scanreg /restore

Follow the prompts and select a registry dated prior to the problems .

If the above dos'nt work , here is more .

It is almost like you have installed a program to run at startup & it needs to run in dos .

Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMI pool message comes on ) or Press Ctrl during bootup , depends on your computer .

    Select , Safe mode .

Start > Run , type in msconfig & press Enter .
Startup & untick the programs you think may be the offenders .

i think theres a command line in the msdos.sys file that has a bootgui=0/1. depending on which number you have choosen makes windows 95/98 boot into windows or dos.
