    Hi Guys
Hope the summer was good to you all.
Someone send me this message and I thought you could help

I am having problems with my computer and thought I'd ask the experts before throwing the bloody thing thro' the window. The computer has been running slow (taking ages to boot fully) and freezing up a lot (not in any particular program but is noticed especially when trying to log on to the internet email page). I have had a few repeat messages telling me that the internet explorer has caused an illegal operation and will close. I have also had trouble closing the computer down, it will do it when it wants to but despite the control alt delete procedure it will not close until I threaten it with flying lessons and in desperate times have to switch it off at the wall to kill it!!

I have run anti-virus and scan disk both in windows and dos. Appart from the first time in dos when the scan reported the clock is not telling the right time ( I think it means the clock on the motherbord and not the clock shown in the bottom of the screen that tells you the time of day). It asked did I want to fix it and I said yes thinking this would fix the problem. I have since re-done the scans and they tell me there are not faults, but I'm still getting the same trouble as before. I really don't want to do a format as I've got loads of work on the computer and it will mean a 2 day job.

I have also tried the BIOS and CMOS settings to see if they are all working and have tried the system stettings to see if there is a conflict and none is to be found.

The only other thing I want to try and don't know how to is to get the C: promt in dos with out the windows dir showing as when I do dos, the prompt reads C:/WINDOWS> I want it to read C: scandisk so that I won't get the grid on the blue screen (showing clusters) and can read the disk from the absoloute root.

My PC is Windows 98 with 17 gig hard drive(3/4 empty), When I did a scan on my dads ME pc I was able to scan his disk with the recovery disk and getting into his c drive that way and I found with his, doing it like that, it found errors on his machine that the blue grid scan did not find.

The more I think about it the more I'm convinced the hard drive is damaged in some way.

Also can anyone tell me how to get the dos to defrag the hard drive as when I type in defrag at the c promt, it tells me I have to do it in windows. I can't do it that way as it keeps restarting and why shouldn't it - windows a progam in itself is running!

Well guys, that should keep you busy for a bit. Please let me know if you can help

OK guy i have ran into this many times dont throw it yet.
First it freezing open her up and blow off the cpu real good with a can of compresed air cpu's get dust build up and cause them not to kool right.
Second the ilegal op, thats an easy one get your win/98 o/s disk click start/programs/accessories/system tools/system information/ when the window comes up click tools then system file checker run that it will prompt you on what to do.
Third make a systems disk restart your computer with cd support at the dos prompt type cd tools/sysrec/pcrestore
that should get it let me know if it does

STW, I've been using Win98 for a few years now & whenever I run defrag mine keeps restarting. Just let it run through and it will eventually catch up on itself. Defrag will start eventually. If you haven't defraged for a while it's gonna take time. Just let it run it's course. When it's restarting, just think of it as the pewter thinking where to put all those little buggers it's moving around.

Thanks so much for your continuing help on the matter of my pc.

Thanks so much for your continuing help on the matter of my pc.

I have tried out the suggestion from the 'special forces never die - we just go to hall and regroup' guy, as it sounded really good advice. All was going well with the 4th suggestion, to select IE in the control panel and remove it and as he said it would not except this comand so it suggested the repair, which I tried also but, I hit a problem when it said I would have to reboot the computer to acctivate the changes. I tried to shut down windows and then I tried to reboot but I could not shut windows and done a ctrl+alt+del (c-a-d for short) then I got the blue screen of death with the following information:
Rundll32 not responding (what is that?) I did c-a-d again then the blue screen of death came up again with the message : exception OE ot 0167 : BFFAADOB. I did c-a-d again to restart windows and the thing crashed again and wouldnt switch off.

I'm having major trouble switching of most of the time now.
    :(

    Hi There,

Atop all the good advice given here's a bit of wisdom I found a while back that may help you in your way thru your problem. It may help when all the good advice given so far still leaves you with your problem.
    "Fixingw98 without reinstall

"Got problems and don't want to reinstall... Don't wanna lose any of your
settings or software? There's a command line option that'll get you back on
your feet in no time. Boot up your PC with a Windows 98 boot disk, pop in your
Windows 98 CD, and once you're at the command prompt, type your CD-ROM drive
letter immediately followed by a colon. So, if your CD was set to "D" you'd
enter D: and then hit ENTER. At this point, type the following command: SETUP
/pf. This switch will restore all of Windows critical files to their factory
state, and in 99% of situations doing this will fix whatever problems you were
having in Windows 98." - From the free Tips download at http://www.x9000.net/.

You can download bootdisks for all versions of Windows here -
