I have a Win 2000, Win 98 and Win XP networked. Win XP and Win 2000 can access/share without any problem. Win 98 can access/share with Win XP. However, my Win XP machine can see but not access my Win 98 machine. I believe I have the correct "rights" on my Win98 machine but suspect that may be the problem. Can someone guide me through the process or direct me to some previous correspondence on the subject?

    Thanks ...

Can the Win2K machine see/access the Win98 machine?

~ If they machines can see the each other that means they are all in the same domain/workgroup.
~ If they machines can see the each other but can not access, then at the very least 'File Sharing' might not be enabled on the machine you are trying to access.
~ If the machine can be seen and accessed, then my guess would be, you have no folders shared on that machine.

Right-click on the 'Network Neighborhood' icon on Win98se machine, then choose 'Properties' and make sure 'File Sharing' box is checked (enabled).
Then make sure you select a folder, right-click and then choose 'Share as..' and have a folder with its contents available for access. Are all those conditions met?
I know these are some basic stuff which you might have already knew but wanted to make sure... ;)

win98 doesn't have the files required for being in a file sharing network with windows xp. you fix this by running 'network wizard' in the xp machine, it'll let you create a diskette to run in the 98 machine. try that first.

Thanks for the input ... I'll give the "disk" a try. The Win2000 machine can see/interact with Win98 and WinXP. It's only the WinXP that cannot access Win98 files. Note: Win98 can access the WinXP files.

yeah still try the disk method, it might just be that. often is.

windows does this though, it's a bit wacky sometimes. if you open my network places > all computers in workgroup, can you see it there? if not try this beloved trick: go back, click all computers in workgroup again, go back cklick again, same thing like ten times, see if that helps. it used to on the old 98 machines :)

also check that all computers are within the same workgroup. (2k & xp: right click my computer > properties > computer name, 98: Control Panel > Identification tab) also make sure that all computers names (name, not workgroup) is unique on the network.

Here's a good article, read it if you need to. http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windows98/troub-331.html

Okay ... did all that was suggested. Now I have another problem. My Win2000 machine cannot access the Win98 drives. I have all of the sharing set and my Win98 can see/access WinXP and Win2000. I believe the problem is that I have the Win98 drives shared but I cannot set the "user rights". When I log in, I access the workgroup and the drives are attached to Win98. However, when I try to set the user rights, I get an error message.

Does anyone have some suggestions on what I can do?

    Thanks in advance ...

Quick update ... Win98 can access the WinXP and Win2000 machines. However, neither can access the Win98 machine. I suspect it has to do with the users who can access. Right now on the Win98 machine, I cannot "add" any users because I don't have access to the network (even though my logon indicates I have attached to the networkl). Now I'm really confused ....
