win 98se won't shut down

I just got this older 450 pent 3 with windows 98se. It will not stay shut down with the start menue. It always restarts. Is there some trick setting I can't find? This box doesn't hook to the net.

 

Well, I got it. regedit> hkey local machine>system> current> control set> control> shutdown> fast reboot changed to 0 value.

O.K. I just woke up try this:


regedit> hkey local machine>system> current> control set> control> shutdown> fast reboot changed to 0 value.

mag00, wish I had an old P3 450 laptop instead of my P2/400 laptop but seriously, glad you got it fixed. Saves me digging back through my records for other alternate fixes. Bazza

ASUS, My 98SE is set as you suggest. Sometimes it still hangs.

I take it you have the old fast shutdown patch for Windows 98. Anyway, have you looked at: http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm

 

Good link, Maxwell. however, if you implement step 5 (renaming autoexec.bat and config.sys) I suggest you DON'T use autoexec.tmp and config.tmp. Lots of programs like CrapCleaner, Cleanup! and EmpTemp delete tmp files. I suggest that use use autoexec.old and config.old, or autoexec.xxx (insert your 3 initials) and config.xxx. Anything but tmp (IMHO). Bazza

Wow, I thought this thread was dead. Good thingy I checked back. Thanks for the exxtra input. I haven't even fired that box up since the shutdown, it may not work a second time.
