How can i get the windows update icon to be minimized on the taskbar?
And would this be a essential thing to do for win update?

If you are running XP, rightclick the taskbar and select properties. Under Notification Area, select Customize. Select the updates icon and You'll have three choices which are self-explanatory. I keep it hidden when inactive - that way it just pops up when there is a fresh update to download.
    Hope this helps :)

    Hi BeerMonkey,

Hopefully you've got this solved by now :)

If not, this link might help. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306525
The Turn On and Use Automatic Updates section seems to imply that doing this will place the icon on your taskbar.

Perhaps someone more knowledgable than I will be able to verify this?
    Best luck,

AFAIK .... WU only places the update icon in the taskbar once an update is found to install.

if you are after SP2 .... patience is a virtue, its going live soon for AU .. previously its only been available for current users of SP2beta versions and Pro IIRC... the go live for AU for all is due sometime from tomorrow, but as there will be a mass influx of users wanting to get it... servers may become slow and not gaining a download slot will happen.

Hi Halo – You are proberbly right although I’ve got the icon sitting in my tray telling me to download SP2. Don't see why wouldn't be same for BeerMonkey. :)

    BeerMonkey,

Sorry I couldn’t be more help. I’m sure the answer is something simple and obvious, but those are always the hardest to find. :)

One thing you could check (if you are running XP – you didn’t confirm this) is this: RightClick the Taskbar – select Task Manager – select Processes Tab. Look and see if this entry is there: wuauclt.exe If this is there, then there SHOULD be an icon available when you follow the first procedure I suggested a few days ago. The only reason I can think of for it not to be there is that you are set up to download & install automatically. I should say that I am not entirely sure about this – I’ve never had this problem.

    You could try this setting:
Notify me but don't automatically download or install updates

To manually download and install updates, you must be a member of the Administrators group for your computer. Windows checks for important updates and notifies you if any are available; updates are not delivered or installed on your computer until you choose to do so.

When Windows finds updates for your computer, the Windows Update icon appears in the notification area and an alert pops up, letting you know that updates are ready to be downloaded. After you click the icon or the alert, you can select some or all of the updates to download.

Windows downloads the updates in the background—you are not notified or interrupted during this process and the updates do not interfere with other downloads. When downloading is complete, the Windows Update icon appears in the notification area again, this time to let you know that the updates are ready to be installed. You can choose to install all or some of the available updates.

    Best luck,

    PP

next up is what versions of XP are you both running and have either of you installed SP2 Beta or RC versions? ( beta users got first bite of SP2 RTM other than the users who DLed the full network install )

I do think you can go over the top trying to work out the update for SP2 or WU5 too much and this may fark something up later... best to leave for a week then if still the same and SP2 is running on all cylinders then repost that you cannot get to WU.
