    Hi,

I have a previous post in the malware forum for a possible infection, however this appears to not e the case. 'thisisu' from that forum kindly helped to get the machine back to some sort of noramilty, however there ar estill some niggles. The machine is a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Win Vista (oh dear) SP1; it is a mates daugters, so not mine.

thisisu indictaed that I should install SP2 which I have tried to do, however the machine will not retain it. It gets all the way through to 100%, reboots, and then says 'Installation was not successful - Error Code E_Fail(0x80004005)' and proceeds to uninstall.

Can anyone help with as I have read a few posts on the net that indicate this is due to other connected drives. There are no other drives that I can disconnect, however the main drive is divided into 'C' & 'D'. 'D' has the 'recovery' system loaded onto it, I guess from initial build and purchase.

All other info I have found has not been of any help, suggesting nuke and pave being my only resort. Assistance would be much appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Hi samtal,

    Thanks for your reply.

I have looked at your 2 links. The first states it is for 'Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone for x64-based systems (KB948465)'. I already have this file saved on my desktop which is the one that won't install. The system on this machine is 32bit so a bit confused!!

The second post details many different things that people have tried, but no definative answer. The reply that looks most helpful is from Martin - Support Engineer on 06th June 2009, but am reluctant to do this unless this will definately help. Could you supply a little more info as to whether this is the way to go. I wouldn't be so bothered if it was my machine, but it is not and I don't wish to end up losing the owners system.

    Kind regards

    Hi unimatrix001,

Apologies for the delay in replying but I have been reluctant to mess with the registry until doing some more research. Anway I have found no info that has been of any help elsewhere so I have taken the plunge; therefore to answer the questions posed.

    * Yes I have run the update readiness tool.

    * No KB933246 is not installed on this computer.

    * Yes I have applied the registry hack posted by ronha84728 in the link.

Having done all this the SP2 pack installs all the way to Stage 3 100% and then comes back and states 'unsucessful' and reverts all changes still.

Any further info would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Hi

I've just been through the same issue, after replacing a dead 320GB drive with a WD500GB drive on a Toshiba laptop.

After installing Vista SP1 from the recovery discs, SP2 would not install and Windows Update would not run. (Error messages 0x8000ffff and 0xc8000247)

The drive requires Intel RST driver 9.6 or higher to work correctly and after installing this driver from the Intel site everything worked OK. (The latest version for the driver is 10.8 but my hardware is too ancient for this to work).
