i tried downloading IE 8 from Microsoft and it says this file is corrupt, so i try my automatic update and it opens ie window that blank but the address bar says
    "http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us"
and it does nothing else, I have left it overnight and its still does nothing, i have to use task manager to close it and even then i have to close it twice
any ideas on how to update?
Im guessing the v6 part of the address bar means IE6?

i think server 2003 and xp 64 share some common files
anyway I am dl now when its done ill install and not submit this post till i have a definite result... same response , it says the file is corrupt. I think that the service that installs Microsoft file is broken but i dont know what service(s) that is.
so i cant get IE 8 so I have to use ie 6 which i have installed
so maybe i can redirect ie6 to point at google first and then use the google search to find the update website? thats my last idea. some one please tell me another way to update (i think that may fix the issue with the broken services)

well, the download page is blank at the moment, so I'm not sure. Also, I would hold off, I'm not sure if it will work with 64-bit windows. But try the microsoft link.

sorry about that, i'm running windows 7 so i cant browse the windows update page.
either way, you arent able to get to the update page.

Try opening ie and click the tools menu, select windows update from there. My guess is it won't work, but who knows. or try to manually enter the address, windowsupdate.microsoft.com

also, check this page for update problems:

    Hi Emilyev,

The problem may be related to a program running on your computer. Try disabling any anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall programs. Next, power down the computer completely (don't restart). Power up and try again.

    Emilyev,
techsent has a good point, but be careful that the mentioned programs aren't re-enabled on reboot...I believe that some of them will be, in which case disable them again and then try the update or the IE8 install.

    Good luck

ok i turned off avg free
and powered down with no restart
uplugged the cord and held the power button in for 10 seconds
then replugged and powered back up
then i applied the hotfix that i down loaded,
    "http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/5/4/754D6601-662D-4E39-9788-6F90D8E5C097/IE8-WindowsServer2003-x64-ENU.exe"
and it installed and ran fine (which is new from what did before)
now when i click on the windows update at the top of my start menu it opens the IE page and i can choose express or custom
either option gives me a page thats says
    "
