Thanks to the forum, I got backup installed on my new copy of win xp home.
Running on a P4 1.7 Ghz, 512 mem. When I get the "backup wizard" up and enter the 'F' drive for my CDRom (back up-to drive) the following message appears "the backup file name could not be used - F:\backup.bkf" and " please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have sufficient access"
It will back up to the A: drive ( like 8mg's  ?on floppies) or to the other hard drive. but will not accept F, which the system shows is my CDRom. What is the work around for this??

If you mean Microsoft Backup, the utility in Windows, then it WON'T backup DIRECTLY to CD's or DVD's.

You have to point it to a folder on the CD, or create a folder, put the backup in it, then copy that folder to CD.
