My PC has been checking critical files when it starts up and then asks me to insert my Win XP CD because it needs to verify a file. The CD is in the drive but it tells me it is not the correct CD. It gives me no option to change the location so I can't copy it to my hard drive.

    Any ideas would be welcome.

    Check the value for SourcePath.

The only line I see is ServicePackSourcePath.
    It says C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles.
Should I change that? And if so, to what?
    Thanks.

No. You need to create the SourcePath key.

I can make you a reghack that you can download. What is your drive letter for your cdrom drive?

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]

    "SourcePath"="C:\\"

Change the above statement to your cdrom drive letter. Then save this statement exactly how it is to a notepad text file named setup.reg.

Double left click to import it.

I would backup your registry first.

This is at your own risk. Should work like a champ though :)

    I meant the setup.reg file.
I already changed the Regsistry to drive "D"

Drive D is your cdrom drive?

Thank you for your help. I ran setup.reg and now I can't send Email or restart my system. What should I do?

There is no way that would have hurt your system in that way. Its not related. YOu are having a different problem.
I try all reghacks on my system before handing them out.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]

    "SourcePath"="D:\\"

    Thats all it does.

    What errors are you getting?

I would have to Email you some screen shots when I reboot. OK.

Screen Shots didn't take. Sorry I took up so much of your time. Thanks for trying.

Well, I found the screen shots, can I send them to you or would you rather I didn't.

    Thanks

Post them here. They have to be 100 or less kb.

Can't seem to copy them. I'll send them to you by Email.

That reghack I sent you is the fix for this.

There has to be something else going on keeping youn from rebooting and such.

Are you sure that you were able to reboot prior to importing the registry entry?

Yes, this has been going on for sometime now.
I probably have to re-install Win XP.
Do you know how, without losing everything on my PC?

Thanks but nothing seems to work.

I even tried clicking on the Win XP CD "setup.exe" but the command line asks for a one digit entry, for what type of installation I want and I don't know what to enter.
