win xp is giving me the following error message during installation:
The signature for Windows XP Pro Setup is invalid. The error code is fffffc0d.
Setup failed to install the product catalogs.

I've tried just about everything microsoft recommended in their knowledge base(renaming catroot folder, check for bad memory...), but nothing fixes this problem. I can't even find anything on this particular error code. Anyone know what causes it?
I'm assuming it's a device conflict, but can't figure out which one. The computer is a HP Pavillion 552w and i replaced the original mobo with an Asus p4s800-mx. Win 98 installs ok, but win xp and win 2k don't. Anyone install win xp with this mobo before?

    thanks

sorry mumbojumbo, but did you do a fresh install or an upgrade from Win 98?

You are looking in the wrong direction. First, you should check the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    Here, kitty kitty!

Edit: Noticed your first post. The problem is not the catroot folder, its catroot2.

And I would delete the folder.

XP pro/XP home will run on 256 just finished set up xp pro and 256mg on pc for my son, I'll probably add another 256
Wife has pc with xp home 256mb, her and the kids have all kinds junk and programs running, runs fine too!
More is better, but maybe not necessary.

For dinner had a hot dog and on it, I had catchup, or was it Ketchup???

whether i do a clean install or upgrade from win98, i still get the fffffc0d error code, even if i rename the catroot2 folder when upgrading from win 98. The M$ KB only gives a fix for the fffffdf0 error code, i haven't seen anything on the KB for the error code i'm getting.

You read too much into the codes. The important part is the Failed to Install Product Catalogs portion of the errror.

Anyway....are you sure this just isn't a bad CD?

yeah, i may need to find another win xp cd, but i was able to successfully install xp onto the same hard disk with a different setup using an Abit NF7-S which leads me to believe the hard disk is ok and something on the P4S800 is causing the problem. Disabling the onboard USB and audio, and using a different cd drive doesn't fix it.
