    Hello
i recently upgraded to Win XP sp2 over ME. When i did this, Windows took considerably longer to load than usual. almost a minute to be exact. I had a problem with approx. 25 or so viruses, which i cleaned with norton, ran spybot and adaware. All problems seem to be fixed, except for this boot problem. Also, I cannot access the Windows Security Center. All options for the firewall are greyed out. Not really sure what happened. Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks
    Rob

How do you feel about formatting and reinstalling XP?

Upgrading isn't ideal at the best of times, especially when you're upgrading over Windows ME.

You have a lot of problems, and didn't really have a solid installation to begin with anyway, so you'd be far better off starting again.

(You can use your upgrade CD to do a full install, but you need your ME or other qualifying CD to prove eligibility)

Hardware might also be an issue? What are your specs like? (I ask because any WinME machine I've seen is usually a P2 with SD-RAM kinda deal...heh)

I Agree with both views of insomniac and mada milty. Win XP needs Minumum of 256MB Ram but still its slow, and Upgrade is realy a bad options

Just for a Try, since you complain about slow start

Click Start > Run > Type MSCONFIG
Click on the START UP Tab
Uncheck all programes other than your antivirus and firewall
    Click Apply, Close
    Windows will ask to Restart
    Click Restart
    upon rebooting
    You will get a Notification,
Check do not show this message again
    Click ok

    Then Monitor the performance

Thank you for your insight, I already closed all the programs from starting up through MSCONFIG and SpyBot. There's definitely some process hanging on in the startup, i just cant figure out which one it is. Also, I almost ALWAYS do a fresh install rather than an upgrade, the only reason I did this was because the person I am doing it for insists that I do an upgrade. I can't explain to him that it's better to do a fresh install. But what are ya gonna do. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thank you for your insight

Once the system boots to the desktop,
    Chk in the Event Manager
There it will show all the Even Histroy
    Chk for the one's with a red " X "
Then chk for the DATe and TIME
You will get an Event ID
    Take that even ID
    Visit www.eventid.net
and Put in the event ID
It will give you some relative likely causes
That might help you to figure out which software or driver or service is causing the problem
