    Hi all-

    This tech person needs help!

I'm not sure what happened to the machine but it won't let me log in ... just keeps tripping it back into a log in - log out loop!

    Here's the specs:

    Dell Dimension 3000- 3Ghz Pent. 4
    Win XP pro w/SP2
    1.5 GB Ram
    80 G HD - 58 G free
    Intel Graphics Cont 82865G
    Sound Max
    Networked via router to DSL

    Have software:
    Avast AV
    Spybot
    Adaware
    SpyCatcher
    MS Office 2000 Premium
    Open Office
    Word Perfect Office 12
(have to know all for clients!)
    Coffee Cup HTML
    Firefox
    Thunderbird
    Fusion 8
    Google desktop
    Roboform
    PhotoImpact 8.5
    QuickBooks
    Cyberlink PowerCinema & PowerDVD
    NoteTab Light
    HP Photosmart v8.1.0.12
    Real Player
    WinZip
    Wise FTP
    Sonic DLA & RecordNow
Adobe Reader 7, Photoshop Album, Download Manager
    Flash
    Java
    Quicktime
    ColorCop

++ Tried doing XP recovery back to earlier date -- no help! Reinstalled Windows -- no help!

Ran all of the antispyware and AV - only got normal cookies - have run the programs regularly - at least every other day -

Don't know what the issue is and can't find the same issue in here - don't have much time in between appointments to figure out - too busy fixing other people's issues and training!!

Let me know what else to do - install - run - shoot - anything!

Yes - I have 2 users on the machine - it will come up to the user screen and then when the user is chosen it starts to log in, stops then goes right to the logging off message!

Considering what you/they have already tried the link below may not apply, but give it a look. You might try safe mode.

This is a typical reaction when $MS has figured out that it's either not a legal copy or it hasn't been activated.

no - no - it's a legal copy!! In fact, called MS and got an updated code # for it when reinstalling it ...

Will try the fix given earlier when I return .. heading off to an appointment.

Must teach those seniors how to properly use their 'paperweights'! ;)
(just kidding ... most of them are really good once they get the hang of it!)

touch base later and let you know how the fix goes.

This could be caused by spyware .....
    Try this:
    Enter the Recovery Console

Boot the system using the Windows XP CD-ROM. In the first screen when the Setup begins, read the instructions press "R" (in the first screen) enter the Recovery Console. Type-in the built-in Administrator password to enter the Console. You'll see the prompt reading C:\Windows (Or any other drive-letter where you've installed XP)

Type the following command and press Enter.

    CD SYSTEM32
(If that does not work, try CHDIR SYSTEM32)

    COPY USERINIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE

Quit Recovery Console by typing EXIT and restart Windows.

You'll be able to login successfully as you've created the wsaupdater.exe file (now, a copy of userinit.exe)

Now, change the USERINIT value in the registry and change it accordingly.

Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT. Navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ WindowsNT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon

In the right-pane, change the value of Userinit to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,"

Type the above value exactly as given, including the comma - exclude the quotes. Also, change the path to userinit.exe appropriately if Windows is installed in a different drive.

Close Registry Editor and restart Windows. The Quick Launch settings should be retained now.

doesn't matter ... tried doing the recovery route ... still no go!

I'm figuring it's a big peice of crap spyware that got in ... even though I have 3 different anti spyware programs running!!!

This is it ... I give up ... going to wipe the drive clean and reinstall ... probably in the morning, since it's past 11:45 pm ... just to let you know, it still tries to log in by clicking on the user name it gets to the desktop background picture and then recycles back to the "welcome" screen. I can get into safe mode, but I can't install any new programs to try to do any spyware cleaning, etc.!!!! :(

If anyone has any other ideas, let me know before I 'kill' what's on there and start over again!!.

Haven't had much time to deal with this ... had to take my dad to the VA hospital for routine tests ... still spent over 4 hours there!
