Win XP PC: Powerdown Issue

I recently flattened an old 650 Athlon PC (based on Win98se) and restored it with XP Pro. Has been running fine with one glaring flaw: after choosing to shut down (or "turn off") in xp, it runs through the whole procress on screen, then the screen goes and the HDD spins down. Yet, the PSU and the CPU fail to power down.

Let me run down what we've done so far to try and fix this problem (note that none of them worked ):

    1) Checked for a newer version of the BIOS, but it has it.

    2) Changed all power options to "Never," "Always On," and I activated Advanced Power Management (APM).

    3) Enabled NT APM/Legacy Interface Node in Device Manager.

    4) Checked for I/O interference between floppy and PACE (which was desperate, considering I knew I didn't use the anti-piracy software).

    5) Checked for useless programs at boot that may interfere with shutdown process (nvidia's nwiz.exe, and NAV's NvCpl.dll & NvMcTray.dll are the only ones). Before you suggest disabling these, please note that the PC has not actually shut down normally since it was restored.

    6) Swapped out the PSU for two other out-of-the-box ones (one Antec & one CompUSA).

And a few other little things that I've forgotten.

A few extra things to note: in device manager, aftee enabled the APM/Legacy support, it had the yellow "!" and gave an error 31 (Windows cannot load the drivers required). Also, I'll reiterate that this was originally a 98se machine. I'm guessing that the problem mainly lies with that big OS jump, considering the machine I'm currently using is the same make & model, has XPpro installed, and has the same problem.

    Here's a belarc-provided synopsis:

MSI MS-6195 mobo (American Megatrends BIOS A6195KMS v1.8)
    AMD Athlon 650mHz
    XP Pro SP1
    256 MB mem
    20GB HD
    44x CDrom
    ethernet NIC
    GeForce 256 32MB
AND the NT Apm/Legacy Interface Node is listed under Other Devices

Any additional suggestions are very much welcomed. Thank you.

    Jess

Does it shutdown properly in Safe Mode?

Yeah, it shuts down fine... still doesn't power down, though. I suppose it's a little better now, because I actually have a screen giving me the "It's now safe to turn off your computer" message. However, it still won't completely turn off.

    Good suggestion though :)

Sounds like your motherboard does not support ACPI.

Go to Display Properties, Screensaver tab, then click on the Power button.

Click on the APM tab, and enable it.

Unless I am to understand you've already tried that?

Yes, I have already tried that. I was also beginning to think it was a mobo incompatibility issue.

In Device Manager, expand the "Computer" section.

Does it say Standard Computer, or something else?

    Yes, "Standard PC."

I just turned on ACPI from the power management in BIOS. Let's see if that did it...

....and that did it. YAY! :D :D :D

Thank you for your assistance, it was greatly appreciated. :)

I'll be sure to come back to this site for further issues if I have them.

    Thanks

Kinda surprised I didn't catch that before... oh well. Thanks again

I think you helped yourself more than I did, no need for thanks :)

    Glad it worked out :D
