wiN Xp pro problem

I am running windows xp pro sp2. I dont know what I have done but, for some reason, when I click on help in the start menu nothing happens, when I click on system info nothing happens and when I try to use system restore it will open but when i try to restore to an earlier check point i get as far as the confirm restore screen and then nothing happens, if I try to create a restore point I am told that system restore cannot create a restore point and to restart windows and try again. This didnt work. I have also found that my system seems much slower. The problem started when word would not save any documents.

Have checked for Viruses and adware but found nothing strange.(Used AVG Free, spybot and adware se personal.)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi PaulP - have you had a look for either crook RAM or something in the background burning up memory. I understand that SP2 also fires up a whole lot of protection gizmos that may also be burning up RAM. Others may have better ideas but memory is where I would look first.
