Since I got my old XP laptop working by reinstalling the OS from the recovery disc I need to install service pack 3. Is that still available for download even though support has ended? I checked the windows update site and was a little confused as to which service pack I should download. Some of the downloads were for Office. Isn't there just a generic download available for an older machine? Thanks....

Along with the download donetao provides, make sure to update IE to IE 8 and incorporate the registry key found here. The registry key will allow you to get security updates for Win XP SP3 until April 2019. I've done it myself and it works.

Thanks to both of you. I'll give those recommendations a try as soon as I can (I'm typing this on my 8.1 machine).

One more question: do I have to install service pack 2 first before installing SP 3? Or, is 2 included in SP3? Thanks....

SP3 includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new series of functions, which do not significantly change the users experience with the operating system.
