I'm working on an older PC (Win2000 SP4, IE6, p4 s478 2.8ghz) and it is doing something a bit odd.... when I launch IE, I get the old "Page cannot be displayed" if I type in "http://www.yahoo.com" for example. But, if I type in Yahoo's IP address 209.131.36.158 the web site will open. Same with if I go to the command prompt and do a 'ping'. If I type in a web site, it says "Unknown host", but if I type in the IP address, it pings just fine.

    sounds like DNS isn't working.
If the person is using a broadband connection, replace the DNS entries with open DNS IPs: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
