    Need Win2K Pro expert!
this is an up-to-date Windows 2000 Professional os on good hardware. for "no apparent reason" the Administrator profile seems corrupted... "cannot load the profile you requested". The Logon goes fine... accepts the password as normal but then 'hunts' for a long time before returning the error message.

One question at first is: when it defaults to a Temporary profile, does that Profile have Administrator privilege?

Is there a scan took I can run that will probe the RIGHT profile and find the error?

are there any known malwares that result in this type of behaviour/corruption?

    thx

If the Administrator Account is corrupt, sounds like you are headed for a install. Have you tried a Repair Install yet?

    thanks for responding!

i have not tried the CD-repair process yet because I could not find definitive documentation on how serious a "cure" that might be. don't want to do worse damage. I thought until I could get a good answer from some smarter people than I, I would try copying the Admin settings into a new administrator-privilege identity. I'm working on that but before I even get done with that I want to scan the system with stinger, housecalls, avast, whatever to see if there is a gremlin somewhere that caused the original issue. my suspicion is that there is not, but it may have rather been caused by a Windows update. Would sure like to know which, if that is the case.

the thing that is so non-standard here is that the user of this system, a real estate appraiser, is a real non-geek who only knows how to typewriter, look for a few things on the net, and do his proprietary job-related database stuff. the system, when you look at it superficially, is squeaky-clean. i'm stumped as to what got it in this condition.

is the CD-repair function in Win2K Pro "safe" ????????

It should run on any (local) profile that you can log into. In other words, I doubt it would work for XP Home's admin account, because you must log into normal mode.

Its a service that runs in the background.
