A relative is in residence at a university, and the building has a firewall and anti-virus software. It is telling her she has a virus. When she looks for it with AVG the computer shuts down. She uninstalled AVG and installed Avast, and it can't find a virus.

When she tries to use the PC she gets a message that there is an error with Win32.sys.

That's as much as I know right now, and I've asked her for more info. I asked her to try system restore and see what that does, but I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas. I'll get more info when I can.

It's an Intel Celeron~1.6Ghz 256Ram running XP home.

    Thanks all...

What is the exact error message and code?Does the system shut down after the error in win32k.sys?

    Thanks for replying.

I don't know the answer to that. There's a time difference and she's in bed right now. I'm hoping to get more information tomorrow.

An update on this problem. The system restore was done, and no error messages regarding win32k.sys have been seen since. (Yes, that's win32K.sys I'm sorry for missing the k in my original post)

    But...

Scanning with either AVG or Adaware causes a crash and a BSOD that says windows has to shut down to avoid damage.

(A scan of individual partitions with AVG, one at a time, did work, and no virus was found.)

Zone Alarm keeps adjusting itself to its low setting. Even if it is adjusted back to medium or high, a restart sees it back at low.

Movies freeze and need a restart.

Any ideas on this? Thanks for any help you can give.

This may help, but won't hurt as long as you answer IGNORE to anything it finds.

TryStart-->Run. Type in SFC ( for system File Checker) and press <Enter>, without a CD in the tray. I presume SFC is available in XP as I am on W98SE and cannot check it at the moment. Answer IGNORE (1 of 4 choices) to everything it finds. Write down anything that it finds, that appears to be a major problem and let us know. Bazza

Also, have her listen/look to make sure the fans are running properly. Overheating can throw a win32K.sys error, but it sure sounds like malware.

When system is shutting down does that just give a Win32.sys error or some other message, Chk if it is a RPC As well , May be you could set the RPC to take no action for the failures and see if that helps ?
