I've read the two threads started by ACE 256 and HECK - nothing seems to apply.

I've got a Compaq nc4010 "executive notebook"; no floppy, no CD, 1 giga RAM just one hard disk and the possibility to do something called "network boot". WinXP Professional SPII, all the upgrades installed.

Since bought it, there has been the occasional bluescreens, mainly when running very many things, and getting hot.

The last days these bluescreens start coming rather often, so I get to worry.

I've added no new hardware. The only new software is some kind of search required when configuring Outlook 2007. I can find no way to get rid of this.

I can't really find any pattern for these bluescreens - other than possibly when the PC is idle a little while?

I don't really know where to start looking for what's wrong. I would have ran the RAM test on the Ubuntu live CD, but can't find a way to do that.

Anyone have some ideas what to do?

No, it's not this error. It starts like this:

    Win32k.sys

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Etc. in hex numbers; that is memory addresses, I assume.

The fan and openings seems to be clean; very difficult to open it looks.

Now I've done that - and have to admit: Don't understand what could be the problem.

    It's like this

I may add that I stopped the Office or Outlook 2007 search program, and have had no more bluescreens - but that may be a coincidence.

Yes, that's what I want to - but:

    How do I do that?

The nc4040 don't have a CD, and no floppy. And there are just two boot options - HD and network.

Another thing - what is sort of understandable for me in the chrashdump file is that the mouse is mentioned here and there. I have some problems with the mouse - every now and then I have to take it out of the USB port and put it back. Lately I even get "no recognizable USB unit" (or something like that; I've got a Norwegian Windows version.)

Could this be a mouse ageing and preparing to die? It's an USB Logitec optical mini-mouse.

    That, or the motherboard.

No access to external cdrom drives? Gotta be able to install software somehow.

It should not be a problem to use an USB CDROM or floppy (I use the SD card slot) - but with no boot option, I can't see how I could use this memory checking program? The idea is booting from CD or floppy?

The nc4010 I guess, is supposed to be on a corporate network, getting all installs etc. by network.

A little news - I went travelling for a week, and the problem grew worse to the point of not being usable: Bluescreen upon bluescreen. Most related to win32k.sys, some to an ati related file, some just corrupting files.

So, yesterday I removed the 512 mB memory module, and am left with half memory. So far - a slightly slower PC, running the fan less frequently and no bluescreen.

Well, I'll wait some days before ordering a new memory module. If there's no (frequent) bluescreen, I'll take my chance the problem is the memory module. Could of course be the slot or overheating with double memory.
